This is a chapter that I also like, largely because of how it frames Yamaoka's relationship with Dan. Dan presents himself as knightly, chivalrous, and sees this love rivalry as a battle for which he must be just and honest.

Yamaoka doesn't even realize he's in a love rivalry, and is just annoyed by the self-righteousness.

The thing I find especially fascinating is that Dan's conduct is clearly presented as being 'good'. This ties into the sensibilities of the author, and betrays something I don't think he intended. To him, Kurita is a 'prize' to be 'won' in a 'battle' of love. This is a perspective that would be less easily forgivable if it were written in 2020, but I'll overlook it since it's written in 1990 Japan.

I'm just glad that Kinjo got to come back for the proper 3-way love rivalry, I was worried he'd remain totally sidelined after Dan appeared. I also love these chapters where they show you how to prepare a dish in some depth, even if it's one I'm unlikely to ever make myself. Something about seeing recipes in manga is so comfy. How about you tackle Cooking Papa after you finish Oishinbo? lol

'After I finish Oishinbo' would mean a decade later at my speed. I don't know if I can make any promise that far ahead, so let's say 'no' for now.

I'll check out Cooking Papa though. The premise sounds interesting.

oh yeah, no worries, just a joke really. you're already a hero for taking on one of the two longest-running food series, it'd be crazy to go for the other one too lol
