Manga might exaggerate it, but bullying in Japan is very much treated as a sort of "don't ask, don't tell" kind of deal.

Japanese culture tends to emphasize the values of self-sacrifice for the greater community. Issues like bullying or abuse are treated as private matters to be kept out of the public eye. Confronting bullies risks negatively impacting the "community" that is the student body and faculty. So as a result teachers will often turn a blind eye and leave it to the students to sort it out themselves.

More and more people in Japan are advocating against this sentiment and pushing to take more active action against bullying, so things are changing. But it's a process, and in the meantime "dealing with bullies while nobody else is willing to do anything" is a depressingly relatable backdrop for a manga story. It's why so many manga start with some kid being bullied and alone, before the escapism aspects of the story to kick in.

My understanding is that it leaned more towards this. Not sure if the greater community's comfort is the exact why, but I remember one autobiography explaining that teachers believed that children should handle bullying on their own.

That is something people say but it's bullshit, the exact same shit happens in the west too. Teachers just don't want to do their jobs and in Japan they just use that as a rationalisation.

At this point how are the police not getting involved regardless I'm glad they're sticking together and moving fowardin spite of those assholes

Why would the police get involved? Unless the school themselves call for them or there is some way they spin it for a pet project for local politics they'll just say it's the schools job to deal with the incident

There will be no justice unless they stand up for themselves.

Then they will get in trouble the instant they do that

When I said that this is a horrible school, I meant that in this one the bullies are confident enough to even use major physical violence in the hallway regularly. The bullying I experienced and witnessed was usually perpetrated on the way to school, in the classroom when the teacher left or in another place where no person of authority was likely to pass by. The hallways were usually more or less peaceful. Although I don't doubt that something like this happens in some schools irl, that doesn't change the fact that this is horrible school.

We did have it. And still do, but we handled it ourselves. I was not bullied directly, but we had our own unofficial groups in each school (in which I was a part of) that handled issues like that. Sometimes by words, sometimes by fists, but we did not tolerate bullying let alone a physical one.

I went to a school that was regularly getting the highest ranks from inspectors and yet the bullies received such nothing punishments that my main bully felt so comfortable that he felt comfortable assaulting me wherever. Eventually 1 prefect actually stood up for me and then he started choking out the prefect, then the deputy head walked past and he intervened because he was assaulting a prefect then he assaulted the deputy head leading to his expulsion. This was after years of him attacking me everyday. How do you think he got so comfortable assaulting people that he just attacked the 2nd highest ranked person in the school? From reasonable punishments? One time the punishment was we both had to take homeroom together unsupervised separated from everyone. Believe me this school is nothing special
