See, the reasoning is that as long as you know how the plot goes, it's your lifeline to follow it as much as possible, else you create a time paradox and then anything goes and nothing is certain anymore. Which is why before the big event, he's trying to keep the story going while doing things that don't impact it much like training so he can survive it.

Imagine, it's like being....I dunno... A German soldier right before WW2. You know what's coming, but you can't avoid it. Best you can do is be prepared, I guess.

I agree with your argument, but not with the MC's dumb reason he said in this chapter :

"if she like me she won't join the hero party" > then join the hero party first so she follow you there, freaking dumbass ! You want and need to be strong anyway, more capable party members means stronger hero party and you will be able to more easily observe the progression of the plot by doing that.
