The old type 0 shinkansen of his youth topped out at 220kmh (140-ish). The N700/700As that he was on as an adult will do 285kmh (or 177-ish) on regular operations in the Tokaido shinkansen (the same trains will do 300kmh/186mph on the Sanyo shinkansen west of Himeji due to wider curves). They were tested for up to 350 but are limited to 285 both because the Tokaido shinkansen is not engineered for it (I think it was designed for 220kmh/140mph max and running it at 285 required car tilting mechanisms), and also because of noise concerns. I kinda doubt that anyone can reach/exceed 220 on the E1/E1A expressway between Tokyo and Osaka, much less 285 as that is a fairly heavily trafficked trucking route.

Also, eeeh, I am going to guess that the Shinkansen and the freeway went parallel to each other in Shizuoka near the Fuji foothills - the railway is majority built within tunnels and the places where it’s outdoors on viaducts are not that many.
