They lost to weaponized edgelordiness and disregard for the rules. The moment they knight guy lost all weapons there, he should have been declared unable to fight. Instead he went "If you don't kill me outright I can still sneak attack!" which is nonsense in a competition fight, where you're not supposed to go for the kill. Also, the magician girl is absolutely OP, she casually did things that were supposed to be impossible. Granted, them not lunging for her at the very start was dumb no matter the approach.
losing weapons does not mean losing, they could be mages or hand to hand specialists.

Man, it's baffling how rare it is for Japanese writers to know how to properly write a defensive character. The tank guy was utterly useless, why is he even on the team?
He wasn't, he did what was supposed to do. He didn't allow the mage to be knocked out instantly at the start of the game and give time for said mage to overturn the battle. But it is just my perspective.

pretty much him doing that palm strike shows he knew how to fight hand to hand too, and he friggin' grabbed the sword, bro shown his strong resolve there.
Oh, they don't just win due to plot armor, and actually lose to more skilled opponents that aren't overpowered villains? Pleasant surprise right there.
and people still got mad at how the fight ended ... that's why we can't have nice things

That is a fair perspective. My main complaint is that he didn't do it nearly well enough. I enjoy defensive characters and combat, so I could have a number strategies for him to use. Him being an obstacle is fine enough, but he only did it once and was immediately taken out of play.

Keeping in line with being a wall and a part of this elite group, I would expect him to be strong enough to break out of the magical hold he was put in. After that, he should continue harrying the wolf girl, making her grow more and more frustrated as he keeps getting in her way, ultimately ending in her making a fatal mistake. Like that, the tank guy fulfills his role as an equal member of his team, he helps highlight the girl team's inexperience, and he also exposes a hypothetical flaw in the wolf girl that could be explored later as part of her character growth.

That said, that's only one way I would do it. I suppose I should just be pleasantly surprised that the girls lost at all.

I don't mind main characters not always winning, but don't give us some BS edgelord who abuses the situation to make it impossible for himself to lose! the whole "kill me or you'll never win" has no place in a damn tournament, because most people aren't there for random slaughter or killing in the name of their country, they're there to prove their skills, make a name for themselves, get rich from winnings

you've said it yourself, "most people" is not "ALL"people!.

These guardian guys are hardened battle-tested soldiers that have seen some nasty shit together, killed a boatload of people and survived, of course their mindset is MUCH better than our group of girl adventurers AND they've experienced killing gallore and trained to military standards.

so no, i don't know why you people call them "edgelords" when the dude is the pinnacle of practicality.

so yes, of course a group of adventurers in it for the fame or profit and thinking like a game/tournament will lose against a team that will go for the most efficient way to kill people with their honed training

I have no problem with them losing the match, their opponents were just that strong and I trust/hope the author has a plan for how this will be more interesting than if they win (and they use that as an excuse to confess).

My problem with their loss is that it feels like Guardian isn't treating it like a tournament but instead like a death-match, and by doing that it feels like they're ruining it for the other contestants. Him going "You loose because you didn't try to kill me" feels almost like you're playing paintball and your opponent (that you shot) goes "You should have used a real gun". All this tells me is that he's either extremely pretentious or suicidal.

"But they have magic! They can just heal right back afterwards!"
Well, firstly, this is the first time there's blood shown that didn't immediately end the match. This makes it feel like it's a friendly tournament where the matches go to first blood (or equivalent. I can accept a bit more given the magic). Secondly, it hasn't been established that the tournament would be more brutal than one would be IRL. Thirdly, that monologue about resolve felt straight up misplaced. They have no reason to try for an actual kill in the tournament and Redline would have lost the match regardless. The other two were effectively out of commission already, so the shield guy would just need to defend the mage and she would use her OP magic to win.
(Guardian being so OP feels weird too, but the author wanted Redline to lose so it's not too egregious.)

It just feels like the author decided that they needed an edgy team to beat them (presumably for story reasons) and wrote a cool fight where they lose, but then didn't think much about how the readers would interpret what happened.

My issue is Renge and co are Level A adventurers, ie either cream of the crop or close to it. And this is a world where an A rank adventure actually means something. Adventurers imo should be much stronger than knights, who basically can only fight together and against select opponents, while an adventurer would need solo skills, plus have the ability to fight against any wide range of opponents that knights would either not be able to handle or need to gank with numbers. A knight might have some better technique, but a comparable adventurer should be way ahead in terms of powers and everything else but technique. So in that regard, no they weren't an opponent that was that much more skilled let alone had more "experience" then them, and had they won that would hardly be plot armor, it would be called an expected outcome.

But we knew this was going to be the only outcome, as soon romance advancement became a trigger had redline won. As soon as doggo girl staked the match on that I was like no way they win.

That's not the point. He took advantage of her holding back when she saw him grab the blade like a maniac seeking to die and then attacked out of the blue when she was still within his (now much shorter) distance. Anything goes in a battle to the death, but this poser acts like he's in one, while cynically exploiting the fact that he isn't. The fight should have been paused then and if he insisted on continuing, both combatants should be placed outside of their range and let guy demonstrate those hand-to-hand skills, if he's so keen. Otherwise it's just cheating.

how can you cheat when there were no rules about that whatsoever?, it's a fight until one side is no longer willing or able to fight or stay conscious and she was too much of an adventurer to push through, he wasn't, and tricking your opponent and mind gaming them is fair play in war.

he's not a poser, he's a spec-ops soldier acting exactly like he should and fights as a fight to the death AS HE SHOULD.

pausing is bullshit, the fight must continue until one side is pummeled with whatever means

yes.. and no, adventurers fight monsters and stuff, these guardians guys are a spec-ops military team of highly trained soldiers specialized in fighting and killing PEOPLE. Adventurers can live(and are shown to be) leisurely quest by quest, the military guys don't they train and train and train.

So yes, red line was doomed to fail as even if they're an A team of adventurers but the other guys specializes in destroying intelligent humans/humanoids

bro she took his weapon and attacked for the shoulder, she went for knocking him out, if she stopped after breaking the weapons I would say you're correct, but his grabbing the sword aimed at him is part of the fight, her asking to surrender after having her sword grabbed is her underestimating who she was fighting. They did good against the tank in making him unable to move, problem here she only destroyed his weapons and he could still fight and made a telegraphed move, she probably was afraid for breaking his arm and he even mentioned that when she took her armor and went all out she acknowledged her resolve.

but we got the mention that "Guardian" is not just simple knights, they survived a brutal fight against multiple opponents while covering for their main army, it's not something that normal adventurers would do, so yes, they were presented as a team of A LOT MORE experience than Redline, also they were fighting to represent their kingdom, so it was Honor against the doggo confessing so as you say, the outcome was kinda expected.

I would say that's a good way to see it, but adventurers also go against bandits (if we follow some other series about adventures guild), but yeah these guys were spec-ops military team, so they were more prepared, even the mage girl warned them and Shiro told them to go all out.
But it would be funny if they fight The Catto, as she clearly shares their creed of a fight is serious business, would be kinda funny if she would obliterate them and their resolve fades.

The moment the nun casually mentioned 'no killing' rule at the last moment in chapter 58, I knew that this was going to be some stupid fucking bullshit. Then the little one drops some prime grade 'bad end' flags by saying she'll confess. What's the next lame trope the author is going write, a time dilation training room or removing weighted armor? Fucking tournament arc shit...

Are you even paying attention? This isn't war, that's the bloody point. The number one rule of any tournament is that you don't actively try to kill your opponents. Unless you can point to something that makes this one different, it's king. "Tricking" your opponent by making them hesitate to strike lest they get in trouble is anything but fair play. If you're not convinced I suggest signing up to a RL full contact competition and try that shit there. It'll be your last, but a learning experience beyond just words.

He's not only a poser, but a cowardly hypocrite too. Soldiers go kill each other on the battlefield, not play edgelords in civillian events, where they know they're safe barring an accident. If one's going to compete, they do so by the rules of the competition, not whatever fucked up LARPing this kind of mindset is.

In that case, why not pretend to surrender and pummel them when they drop their guard? It fits your "whatever means" perfectly and is functionally the same as what he pulled here.

Makes sense they'd lose, they're fighting against war veterans with much more experience and better team composition. They have a knight, a mage and a tank while their team is composed exclusively of DPS. The other team has their bases covered, Red Line is pretty unbalanced and they don't work as a team aside from that time one of them used magic to create footing for the others.

It's not "underestimating", it's refusing to kill an unarmed opponent that did not even resist. Also known as murder, by the way. Because that was what would happen, had she not stopped. Do you really think whatever authorities responsible for the region would shrug that off as an accident? She'd be in deep shit, even if she wasn't particularily troubled by the act itself. What the edgelord did is no different from pretending to surrender and immobilizing her weapon thanks to that. It's cheating by any standard, just acompanied by verbal hypocrisy on top. By RL standards, it would even be a war crime on the battlefield.

Well, this looks like a dubious situation here, so if the Knight really stopped the sword from touching his shoulder by hand and not Aina stopped her sword a moment before, then, I'd say, that his win is rightful. If it was Aina, then the question is, 'Does he fight like this while training and doing mock-up fights with fellow knights/soldiers too, so to have a win over him his opponents (weapon users) need to shove a training weapon up one of his orifices?'

He himself acknowledged she stopped because he was unresisting and had the gall to chastize her for it while acting as if aiming to maim or kill is the right thing to do in a competition fight with an explicit no killing rule. Simply ridiculous.
