how did Olivia not know Lara was a powerful mage? she introduced her as a witch after she camouflaged herself as Olivia. are witches and mages that different?

honorable mentions, Hoohoo gettin mauled by giraffe and also sticking out tongue pretending to be asleep :glee:
I guess Olivia knew Lara was a Mage (Witch), but didn’t know just how important Lara was to the Kingdom.

– Tfw you know nothing about your sister’s job, life or where she lives, and you never try and visit her. –
It seems this is the first time Olivia’s even found out where Lara lives, she just knew it was “a ship” somewhere.

If she hadn’t given Lara the cold shoulder all these years, she could have helped Mao.

Considering how this series has drawn heavy inspiration from western occultism practices, yes, a lot.

A witch is something of a healer, trickster and spell caster. A mage or magus on the other hand is someone who seeks the truth of the universe and god, by doing so they can perform the most powerful of magics that can even warp the nature of reality.

In reality though, witches make hallucinogenic brews and get chased out of towns for dumping them in wells for shits and giggles. Mages spend their lives trying to become one with God while still alive and break their bodies and minds doing so.

I've studied both paths. For practice reference check out Hallucinogenic Plants. A Golden Guide and The Psychonaut Field Manual by Archtraitor Bluefluke. For history, Wikipedia does a fine job.

the notable tapir sleeps upon it's own fluffy pillows
That's probably a Baku.
Baku watch over humans and act as guardian spirits. They feed on the dreams of humans—specifically bad dreams. Evil spirits and yōkai fear baku and flee from baku-inhabited areas. Because of this, health and good luck follow baku wherever they go. Today, the Japanese word baku also refers to the tapir. The animal was named for its uncanny resemblance to this holy chimerical beast.
Since it eats nightmares, it's no wonder it would be found near the bed.
