Another one of Battan's masterpieces. I was also unsure why she's hard on her mother, until you realize she just doesn't want to break the whole time. The moment she breaks, I'm sure her mother will be sad.
I feel like her mother just wanted her to stay strong and accept the reality that she will be gone someday, that's why she keeps mentioning those words even if it hurts. So, someday her daughter will accept the truth and move forward.

It can get tiring especially if that guilt tripping is done often.
And nah, mommy just want to enjoy her day, but her body is not in condition for it. Objective speaking, here mommy gave money and proceed to talk about how bad is her condition all the time. Not once she asked the girl, what she wants/need, or if she can do something for her.

Imagine you, tired from work, exhausted in mental and physical, who rarely have day off, get thrown into this guilt trip trap. Forced to be nice despise you need a rest, adding more mental burden, any normal person will BREAK..
This is not about the mother, it is about the care person condition, whom in today standard, is often overlooked. Always remember, that caretaker is too, a normal person, with her own invisible problems, where hardly anyone will give a DAMN about.

A simple question, are you okay? To such person, helps a lot.

Man oneshots are kicking my ass this week, tearing up when I just want to go to bed.

I don't read any malice or manipulation in the mom's behavior. I think both characters are in the same emotional space even though we only get Kicchan's perspective. Mom keeps bringing up her death because she's afraid too. She insists on walking to the harbor because she wants things to be like normal too. She wants to talk about the future too...she just can't make any promises that she'll be there.

Parents aging sucks.
I love the image of a jumbled, ruined fruit tart as an analogue of Kicchan's emotional mess.
Thank you for translating this one, surprising that it had been neglected.

Big oooooof. Got layers around my emotions but this one just barrelled right through.

Thanks for the work.

Not once she asked the girl, what she wants/need, or if she can do something for her.
Top of page 5 she literally asks that when she asks how things are going in Kyoto.

Like I'm sympathetic to caretaker burnout ( I did a ton of the nursing when my grandma was end of life and then home hospice) but the mom isn't being selfish here for wanting to relive an old memory with her daughter. Who isn't the caretaker - that's presumably her older brother - and who moved to a different city 3 years ago and she apparently doesn't see that often.

It’s a real kick in the ass to be doing stuff with a dying parent and think “This will be the last time we do X…"

25 years. I still miss my dad.
