The people writing those comments are really gross, the concept of this budding trans girl getting into a relationship with her childhood friend is great. I can't see the people dismissing this as anything but transphobic or lacking any narrative comprehension. It's still very possible this can go wrong, I've read ones that have. You know what you do? Be happy with it until it goes wrong. If you dismiss something outright without giving it a chance to breathe we'd live in a very boring world. It's also gross when there's a lot of trans literature out there, some really good manga too like Danshi Kokoseidakedo Gyaru ni TS Shimashita but people dismiss that outright too, like that one's pretty straightforward. And there's a ton of web and light novels have heavy trans themes (too bad these people can't read). The more compelling stories will always stay strong compared to a lot of cookiecutter cancelled yuri. Don't be upset just because this one has sauce.

Thanks so much for translating this! Really loving it so far. Sorry to see the extremely negative comments, but unfortunately I'm not surprised. Maybe it's because I'm a gross bisexual trans woman instead of lesbian, but I don't find this setup at all threatening. Like, ladies, is it cisgender predatory behavior to adopt a female name and identity if you don't specifically use the word transgender? Does it only count if you're out to everyone and do this full time and change it on your ID? Cool gender, but did you get permission from your doctor and city hall? Does it only count if you realized this is something you want after long term individual self loathing or dysphoria? Does having something spur this decision like realizing you want a lesbian relationship invalidate it and make someone a Loathsome Autogynephile instead of a True Transexual? Does it make a girl less of a lesbian if she's into someone who has taken a female identity but wasn't born that way? Like can we all please get a grip?

In most of the world, including Japan, there is frequently little to no distinction drawn between someone who adopts a female identity in certain contexts (especially romantically/sexually) and someone who adopts a female identity in the medical/bureaucratic American sense. Even if the word transgender isn't specifically used, this is someone who'd fall under the "girl" umbrella! What she's doing IS transition! Similarly, the gold-star boundary around lesbianism is not universal. The word "lesbian" or its local language equivalent is frequently used as shorthand which includes bisexuals and trans/nonbinary people and other ambiguous but clearly queer forms of attraction.

I don't think this manga is some galaxy-brained queer text. It seems like a romcom that will probably be clumsy or trashy in certain ways. That's okay! Author is having fun with it, and within its local context this would be totally legible as a lesbian (broad shorthand definition) romance. Not everyone has to like it or identify with it, but I simply don't think it's hateful, threatening, predatory, or invalidating to queer identity in any way based on what we've seen so far. I think it's fun to play with gender. Gender and sexual attraction is weird and goofy after all.

I'll just add that I don't understand how anyone who's being intellectually honest with themselves could call this rapey or a trick, Momiji was instantly honest and upfront about the situation, Konno chose to stay and have a good time. Seems pretty intentionally straightforward.

I will always love and read stories about trans girls realizing they are trans and stuff cause its cute and I relate fully but I just...wish the hook wasnt them doing so for love, it feels weird that they always do that...tell a story like this where thet do it for their own reasons or cause they want to or something maybe.

Twitter will never support anything made of coherence or good thoughts. Using the “rape” word to describe how someone doesnt realize that they’re not their childhood self anymore is extremely petty. Like seriously why would the other girls be interested in Kouhou if his present personality was bad? There’s obvious growth and development and there’s like 3-4 pages of it but nah Twitter’s gonna ignore that and be pissed that sexuality was mentioned. Anyways, these comments do talk a lot abt Kouhou transitioning and I don’t think Thats the direction this’ll go since Ao sees that Kouhou is becoming cute now and beginning to give up thay mental image of Kouhou being cruel in the past, so a development leading him to be a whole different person (a woman) would kind of undermine how he changed as a person in general.
