To be fair, I felt like this was one of the better ones. It kept its cast small and the goals rather clear, so it was able to get almost everything in the limited page count it has.

I can only think of a possible theory based on story:

Based on the spirit contract itself, it's fairly vague Lucas's revenge order, most likely Lucas earlier used Hugo to kill her father, Hugo interprets revenge as killing the enemies of his contractor. Based on that interpretation, Hugo is obeying the contract. It's quite possible that killing her at that time was his way of freeing her from her despair while obeying his contract and he reversed time while he held her probably wishing for a different outcome. Which probably had the unexpected side effect of her memories being retained after the time rewind since a normal time rewind with no other variables involved would lead to the same events would probably play out the same mostly. At the end Hugo did say she granted his wish which most likely was the different outcome that happened.

Lots of promising nuggets in this one that didn't quite connect cohesively, but enough that I think it could be worth revisiting as a longer series. The fact that the eeevil ex was not just pure evil but actually a shounen-style protag was a nice twist. I think MC showed a little bit of growth in moving from revenge to payback, although that growth needed to be shown instead of told. Same with the actual revenge part . And the spirit boytoy really needed to be an active part of the story instead of just eye candy, and there's that tantalizing implication he has his own agenda too. His backstory with Lucas is all sorts of juicy to flesh out how he was doing the whole timeline reset for Lucas's own good.

These are all fixable issues if given the space to properly storytell around them and expand on the details. Overall I'd rate this as higher than average because the author had a clear vision that was held back by the restrictions of the format, rather than any true flaw

I liked the characters. Muriel, who wanted revenge but couldn't possibly harm such a top-tier pretty boy. Lucas who remained a jerk even after he abandoned his plan to go down in a blaze of glory. And Hugo who killed Muriel because... he wanted to end his contract early on a technicality, I guess???
I wish they interacted more instead of just standing in front of this overexplained political intrigue that wasn't even super relevant in the end.

I appreciate having something that doesn't end with them hamfisting a mutual romance even though the disrespectful male lead 1000% doesn't deserve it (or just some guy cause they needed a guy in the end). Like it's teasing a "love triangle" but it's clear that she sees them more as eye candy than as potential romantic partners

Thanks for translating the anthology! Tbh as much as I am tired of """villainess""" stories, I do think the villainess anthology is a bit better, if only because they admit to being villainess stories. These stories had the potential to break out of the mould of villainess stories but still relied on a lot of the cliches that come with villainess stories. In that case I'd rather just read how the stories in the villainess anthology break those cliches (though, we haven't had as much in the later volumes )
