Yeah yet again giving me another example of how Rachel makes no fucking sense. She didn't even just eat the food off Xiya's cheek this time, she just straight up kissed her and then licked her mouth. Like I THOUGHT THAT WAS SOMETHING ONLY LOVERS DO RACHEL?? YOU SAID Y'ALL HAVE NO REASON TO DO THAT RACHEL?????? You could've even JUST licked her face but NO YOU WENT FOR A WHOLE KISS.

Props to you for not banging her in her sleep, that's great that you put her well being and health over.. probably your wellbeing and health. You don't to be doing too great. And I get that you perceive yourself as someone who only hurts Xiya, and you don't want her to be too comfortable with you because there's always a chance that you pounce on her, and realistically there's nothing she can do about it if you ever decided you didn't care about consent anymore. But seriously, she trusts you this much because she fucking knows you. Is the fact that you're constantly trying to make sure you don't do anything to hurt her not reason enough for her to trust you? Like, your thoughts are basically full of green flags aside from the hunger and stuff yet you don't seem to understand that you're a good person.... Like.... What. You could also just have a conversation. Like, talk to her about yourself at the very least instead of finding more and more ways to get her to scream at you for doing something stupid. I guarantee she'd cast away all your worries in an instant because this is a romcom and you like her. God she's so dumb. I love her, which is why I hate her, and god she's so fucking dumb.

the author really likes to throw even more wrenches into the gears of their relationship, not like its not already complicated enough.
Tbf I feel like it's been about the same level of complicated since Rachel got here. The only development really has been Xiya clearing up her feelings, but that doesn't really make things easier between them because Rachel's stupidity and guilt balances it out. The guilt is valid though, the stupidity is just stupid.

Rachel having an actual risk of going into frenzy at low mana is interesting. Probably also explains how rough she was back in the other world.

Right now is clearly not the time for a mana transfer, but looks like Xiya will need to take care of that soon.

Why would she trust you? Because you’re the type of person to physically restrain yourself from uncontrollably attacking her to the point of self harm. She trusts you because you are exactly the person she thinks you are.

Fear not the person who knows their limits and fights hard to enforce them. Fear the person who knows them not, nor what they would do once they find them.

Rachel is written more like a fantasy than being coherent in her actions, yeah. I don't think she's supposed to make too much sense except from the fantasy of being Xiya and being ravenously desired by a handsome woman.

There still is a coherent character there, but in the little actions the focus is not on her characterization but on what the hottest would be for the person imagining themselves as Xiya.

they didn't actually kiss😭 the author just made it look like they did on that first panel so we'd be like "omg they kissed??? wait no they didn't, edged once again"

Rachel not being able to see how much of a green flag she really is is one of her flaws, one which we'll probably watch her grow out of as the manga progresses. Even though she is an angel who wouldn't ever do anything to harm Xiya, she doesn't see that herself. Rachel has this great power, which while she does use to protect the one she loves, it makes her view herself as a monster because of the fact that she's even theoretically capable of causing Xiya harm in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if we got some flashback to the past in which Rachel wasn't in full control of her powers and ended up doing something horrible, or one in which she was ostracized and treated as a monster due to said powers. It isn't going to stay this way forever; it's allowing her room to grow, and I'm willing to bet Xiya is going to help her with that.

And since I like plot, and think it makes tropes shine, this fantasy fetish dice-rolling premise is starting to piss me off.

Oh look, this week. .. 🎲🎲 we shuffle the parts to label non-con and non-con-consent, how original, and previous fear and selfishness toxic subtext should be prepped for burial.

:pout: (I'm not being entirely serious.)

...Well... I'm still here for it... but some chapters it feel more like an artist's feed than a coherent world. Details are adding up that show the shape of who characters are, but that's the rationalization we need to assemble the little inconsistencies and textual course-corrects. This is gradually balancing out but it's clunky.

The story has got such a weirdly design-by-committee or inattentive-writer's-characterization to it despite being written by Chise. Who loves her fetish content but clearly knows how to write stable personalities to justify it. Any one chapter is internally consistent so being serious it's more puzzling and troubling than irritating. I'm guessing it's stabilizing but what a way to broadcast a series not having secured its identity early on.

For all those who believe Rachel’s behaviour is non-sensical:

1. We have little context for how Rachel’s species interact with each other, only that they portray many canine like behaviours. Hence, licking food off of someone’s cheek isn’t out of the ordinary. Does she have a species or was she created or summoned or bound or altered in some way? Not knowing exactly how to act would be pretty common if there was only one of you around.

2. We have little context for how the different societies in their old world behaved. Was there marriage? Was homosexuality accepted, frowned upon, or so suppressed society at large would not really know it existed.

3. If you went an entire lifetime using the person you cared for more than anyone else in the universe as a literal battery, forced by your society to do so, to the point where you believed that taking said power was non-consensual, you would be pretty fucking bent out of shape in the next life.

4. Throw in the fact that the process of taking said energy was sexual in nature: THAT WOULD FUCK YOUR SENSE OF DESIRE AND LOVE FOR THAT PERSON RIGHT UP THE WAZOO!

5. Rachel is also brand new to this world whereas Xiya has had her entire second life to come to terms with what happened to them in their previous life. For Rachel it’s been about a week since she burned to death on a pyre. She hasn’t had nearly enough time to think about all that happened in that world, learn about society in the new one, and reconcile the two.

You're right there's a through-line there, but miss where the critique is grounded.

My issue is with how the chapters are written that each bounce around that through-line rather than are consistent with it. It's more like statistically unlikely mood swings than something like character assassination or contradiction beyond rationalizations. The oddity is not within any one chapter, it's between them, so an identity issue (or quirk if intended).

Reminding me (well you didn't @Me so it's not an invited discussion, begging your pardon here) about how fucked up the worldbuilding and Xiya and Rachel's experiences are is a parallel track to the criticism but pass it by untouched. It's reason for giving some grace here, and I want people to have similar attitude to a lot more fiction in some deep nerdy ways. Of course I also value even sharp criticism that's not seriously punching down at authors and teams or other innocents.

Writing without verisimilitude in the buildup, the sequencing of what vignettes are about, the details of how each plays out, are largely distinct issues from the core worldbuilding facts that add up without any harsh contradictions.

And counterpoint to me, the bits of whiplash could be fully intended because there's a thrill to it. If so it's over my head as I can't appreciate the sub mentality in play well enough to recognize it's merits rank above smooth storytelling. In that case it's not even bad writing just a priority set beyond my present ken. There isn't and shouldn't be some perfect standard of critique, I got that.

People's gripes so far seem justified to me. Not as in some reason to affect others enjoyment but just judged in comparison to expectations about flow of buildup in comparable dark fantasy romances.

Thanks for the info though, it's good points, I'm just saying it's a wider complexity with a lot left to taste and I don't want to leave any risk of condescension. Also pardon that some days I can't write concise for some reason.
