IKR !? Some people are really trying to excuse her with that "She's just misunderstood !!" BS while each chapter prove again and again that she is constantly trying to screw people over for the love of the game and then act surprised/like the victim when consequences for her actions happen !!

The difference between her and Kusunoki is even more blatant in this chapter :

- Kusunoki lost her mom but chooses to still be the nicest person around to others and to do her best to live happy.

- Snekhoe still has her mom but she rather screws over with that boyfriend of hers than actually openly ask to spend bonding time with her while blaming everybody else for her situation.

So, yes, Author can try all they want, pull out all the tearjerking clichés they can but until I see some proper progress/decency into her attitude, Snekhoe can rot alone and cry about it for all I care !

Again, Kusunoki shows snake who's the real boss with the shades. Also, that's a severe lapse in judgement from the snake, To think that someone need to have everything in order to become a genuine good person. and just because she's always bitching about her life being hard and all of that shit, it doesn't allow her to be awful to others.

I seriously don't know why so many of you put so much weight on Otobe calling out Hebi, as the latter didn't even react to the former's words. She's still beneath her notice. Kusunoki, on the other hand, is seen as a threat by Hebi.

That's exactly what is happening. Hebikawa being bad at volleyball (a team sport) is meant to mirror her ineptitude at developing genuine friendship with other girls. Whether she likes it or not, she's being taught how to play ball.

I think reading this whole chapter with "friendship = team sport" in mind makes a lot of sense. For example, how being able to form a genuine friendship is something you aren't inherently capable or incapable of, but rather something you can learn as long as you face the challenge head-on. (Like Moe just forced Hebikawa to do.) And that holds true even if you're particularly introverted and have gone through times of loneliness, so long as your heart is in the right place. (Kusunoki, who learned how to pass a volleyball from reading volleyball manga and practicing by herself.)

There's also a lovely bit of dramatic irony in Hebikawa thinking she's still on the outside looking in when it comes to Moe and Kusunoki, completely unaware she's already been assimilated. Kusunoki is completely unafraid and showers her with kindness, and Moe is sports-brained enough that she'll be friends with anyone who is a) on her team and b) shows effort in practice.

Completely agree. I think in addition to them reshaping her world view through not budging despite her provocation, the fact the two are actually providing genuine friendship and candidness without regard of self-benefit (Otobe calls her out on her trade) is gonna provide her with a breath of fresh air and make her realize how real friendship, one that does not depend on mutual benefit or putting on facades, is possible.

If people are incapable of differentiating that and make blanket statements about her being "terrible", and then harass and demean other readers who express their enjoyment of her character, then that's their shortcoming on display.

In my opinion, I do not think this is worthy of making long debates on. I mostly just read the chap, shrug, and move on to another manga. I'm glad you are enjoying this in your own way. I envy you.

Yeah I think both people who like and dislike her sometimes conflate the two. I've encountered some who think her existence as a good plot device and literary foil somehow makes judging her in-universe character unfair.

But on the other hand there are also some who claim they don't understand why people like her because she's a terrible person in-universe.

I think both sides have equally valid viewpoints, and are just looking at two different, independent perspectives, and I wish there'd just be less squabbling once it's understood both have a point. She's objectively a good foil and an intriguing character by design from a storytelling standpoint, but she can also be liked or disliked for her in-universe characteristics for those who like to self-insert and look at the show from an in-universe perspective.

Agree on almost everything but is MC really portrayed as a loser here? He seems to be pretty academically capable, responsible and rather emotionally mature apart from his over-the-top trauma with snek. He also socializes pretty normally and has friends.

I don't really get why people like Hebikawa. Feels like it originated somewhere else because very little in the manga would make you like her. Is it like an ironic thing that went out of control?

There are people who like characters based on whether or not they're good people, and there are also people who like characters based on whether or not they're interesting and/or add value to the story. People like me fall into the latter category.

5 year-olds don't understand why they're pulling their crush's hair. It's when they grow up that they'll notice the nuances of their emotions at that age. This also applies to onlookers looking in from the outside.
