I wonder if Hebikawa is gonna get relegated to just a side character after this arc. This might be the end of her time as a “rival”, even if it just barely started.

Hebikawa is as much a main character as Kusunoki. Arguably almost more than Keisuke, given the focus of this series is Kusunoki and the changes to her character from childhood to now.

She and Hebikawa are counterparts and diametrically opposed in their worldview and way of interacting with the world. Hebikawa is "Dark", Kusunoki is "Light". It's why Hebikawa is so obsessed with the idea of revealing the dark she's convinced exists within Kusunoki; they were similar as kids, had similar formative experiences involving threatment at the hands of classmates and others close to them, and went in opposite directions from that watershed moment.

Hebikawa is as integral to Kusunoki's plot as Kusunoki is for Hebikawa, because both are needed to expose "the truth" about the other.

Hebikawa being "relegated to just a side character" would be the author completely ruining this series and misunderstanding the point of their own writing.

As usual, chapters built around Hebikawa are great.

Having her get taken down by Kusonoki and Moe was nice too, although this chapter again highlighted the Kusonoki issue:

• What Moe-chan was doing was 100% intentional. She was deliberately using her agency to drive the story forward.
• Kusonoki, on the other hand, was driving the story forward unintentionally, so we were still seeing a very 'generic' version of her. Even the decision to join the volleyball team was driven by Moe saying that she'd be doing the same thing herself, with Kusonoki just hesitating. (And of course, Kusonoki happens to be good at volleyball.)

The author really needs to allow Kusonoki to have more agency and more depth.

Obviously the solution is for Hebi's mom to marry Kusunoki's dad, then they become step-siblings and Snek can finally learn that female friendship CAN indeed run that deep.

I would pay to read an entire spinoff series about the day-to-day life of Kusunoki and Hebikawa, just look at the way the Snek blushed when Kusunoki sincerely complimented her and said she's really a sweet person deep down! (facts btw, despite everything Snek still has capacity to be sweet deep down)

Dang, Snek coming with that "everyone's got it better than me" and flagging Kusunoki as a perfect girl with no defects and having everything and then reader discovering she has no mother and still lives her life trying her best was a huge punch to Snek's ego... I hope the three of them help each other with their flaws and to face their problems... I really like the three of them! Moe did a great job pointing out Snek's plot with her friend and Kusunoki unintentionally getting under her skin was pure gold! xD

Just don't worry about it and enjoy the parts of the series that you like.
Asking that sort of question this far in just ignites flame wars and doesn't do anything to promote constructive discussion of the series.

I like how it looks like the author is foreshadowing the most predictable of places (catfight), then flips it into some weird trio dynamic which surprisingly has chemistry (Otobe calling Snek out on her sh!t and Kusunoki unintentionally throwing shade by being nice, and them possibly growing together with their contrasting personalities).

I honestly think the author might just be reading the readers' comments and looking to subvert the tropes. I think the storytelling has been good in that I never know what to expect but the twists don't manifest themselves in an unnatural way

I don't care what arc or growth they take Hebikawa through, they'll never get me to truly like her. She's not good natured at heart imo. Manipulative and self-centered at heart.
