Afaik it functions as a dismissive particle for the bento, so I thought of changing the last part to "bento, of all things", but it would make the whole sentence too long for typesetting.

Yeah, in that context it's mostly dismissive like "a mere bento" or "something like that bento". And yeah, "of all things" would work too.
