This is embarrassing to admit but I still have no idea what the intended significance of her ears is. I feel like its a cultural or judo related thing that's flying over my head...???

I tried to Google it too. Apparently "getting your ears boxed in" was an old time-y punishment for children for misbehaving. But it doesn't seem it would ever leave external injuries that look like this - more like hearing loss or tinnitus. Guess it's a bit of artistic license?

She has cauliflower ears which is usually caused by when the ear is so repeatedly hit, fluid collects underneath the connective tissue causing the cartilage to die and fibrous tissue is formed in the skin over the ears.

This is most commonly seen in anyone who faces repeat trauma wounds to the head, in particular martial arts and contact sports.
