what's that for? Nitanda looks like the typical introvert. he'll never pursue another girl/woman. that's basically her putting him on the backburner/back-up to get a "bigger fish"[\SPOILER\

They’re moving so fast it’s disorienting. I thought I missed a chapter but no. They said they’ll go camping last chapter so they immediately went camping. No build up or anything, they’re too comfortable with each other.
They also went from Christmas to Valentines in one Chapter. The Pacing is all over the Place.

This chapter is the last chapter of the 1st volume of the novel, which also marks the end of their 1st year in high school.

The second volume has 25ish chapters, if I remember correctly, but I don't think they will adapt all of them. If I have to guess, probably 15-20 chapters until we get to the end of the 2nd volume (assuming this is not being cancelled or anything like that).

Nitanda never outright says he loves Machino, either in his monologues or out loud, but it's clear that they both care for each other at the very least.

In the novel, towards the end of the 2nd volume, Nitanda pretty much wants to take their relationship to the next level, but Machino stops him. Instead, she brings up the "if we're still single in 3 years, let's date" stuff they agreed on (this part was not adapted in the manga). This skipped part is why I feel that the manga will take a different route than the novel and have them end up with each other soon.
Thanks for the spoilers
It really does not make any sense that after all of what they've done so far they are not dating yet - suppose to be natural in my opinion unless author just wanted to drag the story out, especially with that line at the end of the 2nd volume you mentioned - sounds even weirder counting everything that happened so far.
It would indeed be nice if manga overwrite the dynamic between them in more romantic

How many times will I have to repost the IS SHE INTO YOU video???

YES, NITANDA, SHE IS INTO YOU! For fucks sake, man.

This will become a hentai manga and Nitanda will still be pondering if they should be dating
To be fair its also her own fault. She has routinely trased him in such an insinuating way to then immediately deny it.

Now she's basically asking for it but since she trained him to expect her to just be messing with him then its fair to assume she is still just joking around

Well just read that this is 2 vol LN that on hiatus

Then prepare for the worst. Seen recent trend of adapting short LN and end in 2 vol :qq: ( I still don't know why JP did it)

Honestly though
the status quo they maintained throughout volume 2 was frustrating for me, to say the least. As I continued reading, I was expecting there would be something by the end of it, but then... nothing. Sure, we got that promise, cute and all, but considering there hasn't been any continuation of the novel (and I have a growing feeling there won't be one), there's a high chance there'll be no payoff at all. Maybe that's why they changed the dynamic and how their relationship goes in the manga.

Well, if there was one saving grace, the novel provided us with short-haired Machino at the end of volume 2.

Man, there is nothing more miserable than this trope of "we love each other. so let's date in X years" outside of pure cuckoldry. Why is it even a thing in romcoms? Thank God that the manga might change it.
