So his brother should spend his entire life walking on egg shells around his brother's friends? This is how he gets over the trauma. We can tell by the last panel that she can see something is up. This has happened before in this series idk why people are pretending this isn't his usual cycle. He has doubts, but then she helps reassure him by taking action. Just like how we got a hint that he noticed something was off during their date. She has noticed something is off with him at the end of this chapter. It is now her time to show him that she noticed it.
He could be honest with his brother and approach him first. That what's being an older sibling is about. Sometimes your younger sibling doesn't know how to express themselves, so you try to bridge that gap. I've done it plenty of times. He doesn't have to walk on eggshells but he can give advice or even try to get to know his brother a bit more. There's no way at this point that he doesn't even have a hint that his brother doesn't have an issue. She literally just told him how grumpy he always is. That would be a red flag for me.

I'm the oldest in my family and even I knew when my baby bro liked someone I would do everything in my power to try and help him step up. This dude is somehow always absentminded. He can be self aware everywhere else but with his own brother.
He probably thinks he is helping. He's showing her baby pictures and telling positive stories of how he was when he was younger.

Any other context, that would be the right thing to do, it's just that Youta has that specific hang-up.

This all happened in the span of 1 chapter. Probably 30 minutes in universe.

Do we expect Rei to just put 2 and 2 together, and immediately jump to the conclusion of "Oh it must be my fault"

Some people are really good at hiding things, and why would you suspect something is up when clearly we have seen their relationship at home. They both act normal around each other. Also his trauma isn't necessary his brother. It is the girls trying to get with his brother, so he holds no resentment towards his brother. Thus making it easier to hide from him. Blaming Rei for being blissfully unaware of what is going on is completely unfair to the character.

He has not told his brother about his insecurities. His brother loves him so much, but some stuff just isn't obvious. He has kept this chip on his shoulder for so long not showing it to anyone. It was bound to come up at some point. It's a good thing it came up so late into the story, and not super early on. Everything is solidified at this point, and this was a way to make things more interesting to read. Otherwise the plot would go stagnant, and nothing would happen.
yeah i get what you are talking about in the latter half for story purposes i have no issue i mean thats the whole point most people started this manga to begin with, however there is a character inconsistency for a guy who loves and does the whole perfect persona for his brother and Rei HAS shown awareness in these things he is majorly stupid in being mindful when it matters, his insecurity is glaringly obvious if yukimura could tell in just seconds from his expression

They do not. Rei is quite aware of how Youta has changed over the years in multiple ways, for example (Rei's own words) that Youta is actively avoiding competing and getting involved with him now.

edit paraphrased Rei's words "Youta changed, he kept people at a distance, especially hated interacting with girls"

I don't think Rei is in any way the bad guy here or the one at fault. But he never reached out and now suddenly wants to scout out the person Youta has been getting close with which seems a bit unfair.

I also do think that a lot of the frustration stems from this whole chapter having absolute zero setup and being a bit too late into the story.
Nothing was organic. She follows him to the club to leave him and do something else which she can quit at any time but his brother is there and she decides to stay there the whole time and it just kept piling on. Everything was just too convenient to max trigger his trauma.

You know, as annoying as it is, you have to admit that the mangaka did a good job making his insecurity justified. Most manga where the MMC has a trauma about girls using him have it be in the past, with flashbacks to the key points, but here, we see him get emotionally beat up by girls constantly. It's completely reasonable for him to struggle believing a girl could genuinely like him.

Guys, c’mon, think for a second. This misunderstanding here is important. This needs to happen for him to actually truly face the insecurity and trauma that’s been following him all this time, it’s how he can actually really get over it and resolve the issue once and for all.

it's a bit annoying but feels necessary for Tohno to face those insecurities. And like. Houjo and Rei would need to talk at some point lol, like this is a romcom Houjou and Tohno are the main characters so they gonna end together and it's like... When they start to date should Rei hide if their family ever invite Houjou for something? I get not becoming best friends, and sure Rei can just go do something and keep avoiding but like... They would need at least say hi sometimes. And this entire conversation they had here was mostly small talk that like... they got a bit excited and happy because they talking about someone they both love?!
The whole reason why Rei is there is cause he genuinely interest in trying backstage work. But during it I don't think Rei would be in the wrong even if he actually went to talk with Houjo and wanted know her a bit more, i think it's fine wanting to know a bit of your brother's friends? Not a must, but a normal thing to want??
BUT HERE IT SEEMS HE ACTUALLY REALLY WAS JUST FREE?! He even got there before Houjou, should he give up helping in this task cause she was free too? Or should they be completly silent while doing it ?? No ofc not, since they both ended there why not chat during those 5 minutes doing the task?!
I do get the protagonist being a bit shaken cause he never really got rid of those issues but they didnt do anything wrong at all, so feels a bit silly for some readers act like Rei is in the wrong <:/

Are you actually blaming his brother for wanting to get to know the person his brother has suddenly gotten close to?
I am blaming him for being a clueless oaf as stated in my first coment, I am blaming Rei for, after many, many years of snatching every little victory from Youta, still not realising what drives his little brother.
Ahh yes a therapist will always tell you. The best way to get over a crippling insecurity is to just completely avoid it.
Don't give me this bullshit, Rei is not a therapist nor is he approaching Houjo because he wants to therapise his brother, he does this out of mere personal curiosity, nothing more.
