well the manga started out on the fall. the spica family deaths happened 2 years. it's been a half a year until they started their revenge. than several monthes maybe 4+ until winter break. right now it's summer break. it's probably been a year since the first kill in the series.

It's even worse than that. There was an English language podcast about the case. The podcaster read that sand in the killer's clothes had traced back to a certain American town. So he went to the town and interviewed the police about the case and and what exactly the Japanese police had shared with them about the case.

The American police said that they had never heard of the case and there was no record of any contact from the Japanese police about the murders.

So either the Japanese police know exactly who the killer is and they're protecting him or they have just ate coffee and donuts for 25 years and not put any effort in.

I honestly don't know which possibility is worse.
