NGL, think Zareth is just being handed the idiot ball by the author. He knows he was blessed by a goddess, and that that blessing involves impregnation. "900,000 hours" might seem big at first glance but:
1 year = 365 days with 24 hours each = 8760 hours
-> 900, hours = ca. 102.75 years

If the Mara civilization vanished only 102-103 years ago then it is NOT ancient and knowledge about how advanced their technology was should still be remembered and known by the surrounding countries.

Could it be that it is not supposed to be 900,000 hours but
a.) 9,000,000 hours (ca. 1027.5 years) or
b.) 900,000,000 hours (ca. 102,750 years) or
c.) 900,000 days (ca. 2,465.75 years)?

Possibilities a or c would fit the best for Mara civilization being an ancient and mostly forgotten civilization while having a fitting time frame.
