That was dumb. It's like nobody told him that combat gauntlets and melee fighters exist in the world. Despite being a veteran fighter, Garen just goes, "Here's your sword and shield; use it", instead of letting him try various weapons like axes, maces, halberds, etc until he finds the one he's comfortable with.

Garen saw Geonwoo using the shield when fighting the gnolls so that's not Garen's fault, and Geonwoo probably just took a Gnoll sword with him after that fight

Garen probably assumed Geonwoo decided these are what suited him the most when Geonwoo really should have told him about his specialty.
