Even more than that, it's just lazy, because it's always "getting the axe" and never "oh maybe the author's reaching the climax/finale". Not every story ending before chapter 300 means it was cancelled by the editors/publishers, sometimes an author knows when to close the book on something.
And the apparent inability for people to realize/acknowledge that and always go "oh, it's been less than 100 chapters and the story I like hit a big milestone? Must be the Japanese killing another good story", which is what "axe" often seems to imply—just feels at the same time entitled but also an indication of media illiteracy for how stories are written.
One good and recent case is Hima-ten! It felt rushed at some specific part close to the end and the series ended before 100 chapters, but there were series in jump magazine in a worse situation still alive

Then once last volume released physical we had a verbal confirmation from the author he didnt want the story to drag long and the series was never supposed to be long to begin with

This is not about getting a confession out of anyone.
This is about watching two absolutely adorable tweens awkwardly and sweetly dance around themselves as they slowly make their feelings known to each other and themselves.
It's about the journey.
Not the destination.
Enjoy the bus ride we'll be crossing some beautiful scenery.

Its a classic
The journeys is always the most important thing in a manga. The result is just satisfactory because you followed the struggles and made connection with the characters during their paths

Its so hard to make a romance manga keep enjoyable for l long when the story continues after they start date that the most common decision is... Start developting a secondary couple right after

Blue Box did it, Kaoru Hana too, Polar Opposites did twice

These slow burns work so much better for characters in middle school. They are just starting to be really aware of each other as a boy and girl unlike the awkward highschool and adult romcoms that drag things out and act like holding hands will get you pregnant.

I'd be surprised if either of them confessed their feelings within the next 200 chapters. This seems like it's going to be a slow-burn romance. I get the feeling they'll be content simply enjoying each other's company without taking any risks. They'll probably keep this dynamic going until their final year of high school.

Arguably this series shouldn't last more than 120 chapters total, as that would be about 12 volumes going by current precedent and we're in the middle of what will be volume 5 currently.

But we hit a point where they've considered hypothetical dating situations for the other person and found it undesirable, and that's a big "third of the way through" sort of flag. Two-thirds would be soldifying their respective romantic feelings for one ankther, and the climax would be a confession with the series ending upon them dating.

Maybe that would mean it should be like ~50 chapters for each chunk, but this is already a point where the momentum is beginning to carry over into inertia, so I expect the pace might actually increase some as they work through the why of their discomfort over the thought of the other one having a partner. So ~70 chapters to ride out the rest of the way to a confession sounds about reasonable pacing-wise, from where I'm sitting.

The slow burn is going to continue, but they ARE basically dating at this point. "I would hate if you were dating someone else" "Yeah, me too" and "This was our first fight". Like, who talks like that with their regular friends? lol
