I think and he could have killed her simple as just shooting an Optical Spell considering she couldn't defend herself anymore at that point but they choose to retreat because reinforcements from the Empire where arriving.

Funny that we get to see, at this point with 7 volumes out, some of the other characters in the 203th that we were able to see quite sooner in the anime. Rhiner and Wilibald finally make their appearance! (In the anime, their appearance starts around the hellish 1-month training.)
