I think the ending is ambiguous, especially putting aside the lens of authorial intent. And I do do that, fuck authorial intent. I like this story a lot, whether you interpret Fuwako as straight or bi, I think the ending is really beautiful.

The back-in-time chapters are the best! Modern-day chapters make me empathize with the overwhelmingness of so many sudden experiences and expectations too much, in other words: they're too good at what they're trying for!
