Hotaru has trust issues and did terrible things out of desperation when she thought she would lose the one person she cared about and Yuma was so far in the closet she didn't realize she was in there and ended up being a mess of conflicting emotions. I feel bad for Takeda but I really don't hold anything against the Yuma and I can understand why Hotaru acted the way she did, even if it was terrible

This is one of those yuri titles that is SO CLOSE to making a nuanced point about sexuality, objectification of girls, and the cycle of sexual violence. You've got Hotaru. Hotaru is neglected by her father her entire life and has self-esteem in the negative. She hits puberty and the only positive attention she gets from anyone besides Yuma is from men who view her as an object. Our girl's gay (maybe bi, probably gay) but she's only really worth anything to anyone if she performs her role as an object to the gratification of men. Starting with Fujiwara (I assume), the regular objectification escalates into violence. And that objectification and sexual violence gets reenacted on Yuma cause Hotaru doesn't know how to have a relationship. And you've got Yuma, essentially a late-bloomer who becomes a victim of this violence but has a complicated relationship with it because it's with her friend who she has always viewed as more than a friend (unconsciously or otherwise). Hotaru first experiences self-worth and sex through passive objectification and violence and she continues this cycle this time in an active role with Yuma with some level of self-awareness but always believing that this behavior in this context is safe.

These are all facts of the story and they are all very interesting and would make for a fascinating exploration. Unfortunately, this is not what this story is about. Hotaru is stripped of all nuance and becomes basically a 1D hentai character. Yuma is under-developed. Takeda and Fujiwara are fleshed out just the amount the need to be in a story that should be about the devastating relationship between Hotaru and Yuma. I can see why people absolutely hate this manga/anime because when you take the story at face-value, it's about vile people hurting other people for no reason. But the thing is that there IS a reason, they're complicated and grey reasons, but they are reasons and they do exist in the real world. I think that's what really fascinates me about this manga. Somewhere in one of the extras, the mangaka says that the original plan was to do this with married adults, and I can see how this story would have worked if they would have had the room to explore the dynamics that they set up so well.

You also see this in Citrus. Both of these titles deserved better.

Whole thing felt…under done. What was the deal with the friend character’s virulent misogyny? Takeda seemed to only exist to affirm Yuma at every turn. Hotaru was just a lying sex pest with a sob story. I kept thinking that the whole point was for Yuma to figure out her sexuality and maybe hash things out with Hotaru, but not actually get together.

Solid meh.

After watching the anime, I'm glad I skipped to the last chapter of this awful manga. There was absolutely no closure for Takeda. The girls just go "oh, let's move in together after we graduate." It feels so rushed. And honestly, aside from Takeda, all the other characters are just scummy, yes, including Yuma. Any good partner would tell their significant other that someone is sexually harassing them. But she just lets it happen, and gets groomed by her attacker. Yes, Hotaru has gone through horrible things, but that doesn't justify her doing horrible things to the person she claims to care the most about. Every villain has a sob story somewhere in their past. If Yuma was gay but didn't know it, that's fine. Go to Takeda, explain it to him, so he can move on, and don't string him along. What's even more insulting is the fake "BL" ending Kodama Naoko gave Takeda. So instead of giving him closure, Kodama decides to basically give the readers a middle finger?

I'll just come out and say it: JUSTICE FOR TAKEDA!!

My boy should have been told the truth by either Yuma or Fujiwara. But both were scum. Yuma for her inability to just be honest, wanting to have Takeda and Hotaru when it's convenient, and Fujiwara for just using Hotaru's secret feelings for Yuma to gain sex from her. Fujiwara had no problems getting girls from the start, so this just comes off as being reprehensible for the sake of it. If Kodama wrote in the story that Fujiwara told him clearly, with no subtle crap that can be misinterpreted, and Takeda refused to listen to reason, then sure, I wouldn't have an issue with him being completely in the dark due to his own forced ignorance. But instead, Fujiwara just leaves cryptic comments like "all girls have a dark side." And that's supposed to be his warning?

All in all, this will be one of those manga I hope I will forget existed.
