That fight was sick, great show of veteran techniques. Huge power and refined dexterity vs the same but also utilizing blind spots and feints, really well done. I would have loved for it to be longer but such is a spar.

The ambrosio shadow thing is fascinating, I’m assuming it’s either creating a shadow of the sword saint (as he was mentioned earlier in the chapter) or a shadow of Beryl himself (showing him as unparalleled compared to anything but himself). But apparently it never constructs anything BUT beasts, seeing their reactions. Man I am hyped for the next one.

Thanks for the translation!

First, unrelated to manga. The anime is okay, but after reading the manga i can't help but have a slightly higher expectation and sadly it didn't deliver on the ep3, ep1 was quite decent and enjoyable.
All I was asking for is for the secret technique of "I will disarm you, throw it up the air, and use it against you". That didn't make it to the anime 😔
I wonder if that's because they thought that move is too unrealistic anime, and him pinning down Serena will attract questionable eyes. Honestly? I still wanna see it. Ep. 2 casual disarm was utter fuckin badass, but Serena-disarm is on a different level.

The vice principal had a sad past with his student that want to combine sword and magic but unfortunately something happened to him making the vice Principal really against with sword, thankfully with Ficelle comes to the mage squad and having old man Beryl won the fight now the vice Principal want to learn sword too which is kinda funny but really awesome.
I think the issue his first swordspell pupil had wasn't about having low magic ability, but rather about lacking basic swordmanship skill. I assume there was no swordfighting teacher back then, so all the pupil had is just basic magic training (which he's not good at) and the guidebook, without actual swordmaster to complement his study alongside a mage.

He's not just exhausted from practicing swordspell; he is exhausted for being unable to handle the sword properly.

:meguupog: This development is very different from the LN.

In the LN, the VP had no such backstory, he was mainly obsessed with being a better mage and surpassing Lucy. He also disliked the sword magic, but it was because it was too novel, as pioneered by Fissel. Here, he had previous students who tried to do what Fissel did, but they weren’t successful and that affected his perception of it.

In the LN, he also did not seem to care too much about the students, here he was willing to join the class and try to understand the sword (on top of actually caring for his students, at least his past students).

In the LN, the named monster was sealed and kept locked away by Lucy from just about anyone. Here, it is still restricted access, but still accessible and they are using it for training. We also did not know of this until much later in the LN version of the arc.

Also, Beryl didn’t fight the VP in the LN and the VP never told Beryl about how he can cut magic with his sword. Beryl found this out differently in the LN. Regardless, this is still an important fact for this arc, at least in the LN.

All very interesting differences, but IMO these changes make for a better story development.

Bromance.
Damn extacly what i hoped for... they are now friends and trust each other. it is awesome.

the fight in itself.. that artist could make storyboards with action scenes pretty easily. so detailed. most manga doesn't often show it directly. i am impressed.
