did he fight himself or the last sword saint??

Not himself for sure since he couldn't imagine even a chance at winning.

Lucy wasn't in that room when the fight occurred so not sure if that's the level of sword saint.
But even she's never heard of Ambro spawning shadow swordsman.

So, nobody told him what his new sword could do? That's real smart of them.
I wonder how many people actually know that information?

Bardel who crafted the sword said that Beryl's sword was the first 'magic' sword he'd ever crafted, I believe, so he wouldn't be too familiar with it. Most of his other students are sword junkies who don't possess magic swords, so they wouldn't know. Fissel might know, but she powers her blade using her own magic so she might not be aware of what innately magic blades are capable of.

I think it's decent but don't expect it to be like this manga. It's adapting the LN while this manga is also an adaptation that changes a lot of things.
Gotcha, appreciate that rundown. How has the combat been in terms of translating to animation? One thing I love about the manga is the fact the fight choreography is so well shown with the moves. Down to the feet placement it adheres to true swordmanship.

So... anyone knows how to pronounce the name of the former sword saint... Yclept?

Is it Yisilept, Yikelp or Wayklept?

Considering they mentioned the sword saint at the beginning, I'm gonna guess that's what it spawned. It's a Mimic Tear of the Sword Saint.

the obvious assumption is that the greatest enemy the monster could think to create would be Beryl himself, but i would love if it instead created somebody from the past. A previous sword saint, or even Beryl's father.

I'm guessing the previous sword saint, too. The shadow is church-affiliated because of the sword's design, and it would fit the Chekhov's Exposition.

First, unrelated to manga. The anime is okay, but after reading the manga i can't help but have a slightly higher expectation and sadly it didn't deliver on the ep3, ep1 was quite decent and enjoyable.

Now into the manga, holy shit. What a cool fight from old man Beryl fighting against the vice principal, probably the 2nd strongest magician so far. The realization and "enlightment" after being told that his sword can cut magic is super chill, he immediately change how he is fighting against a mage after one of the disadvantage fighting against mage is gone.

The vice principal had a sad past with his student that want to combine sword and magic but unfortunately something happened to him making the vice Principal really against with sword, thankfully with Ficelle comes to the mage squad and having old man Beryl won the fight now the vice Principal want to learn sword too which is kinda funny but really awesome.

And the last panel, that shadow definitely the sword saint as the mentioned on first panel. Shit is going to be fire next chapter, Old man Beryl vs the Shadow of Sword Saint.
The manga settled the bar high... The anime is fine, a bit rushed in my opinion...
