Yeah, people even ate each other during really bad famines, like The Great leap forward or the Holodomor.I've always said that in those fantasy mangas where some of the ingredients we eat nowadays are considered trash probably never had to deal with famines a lot because i guarantee you if famines really strike hard they'll try to eat anything and make it more palatable, hell a third of the food we have today where created in times of duress (the others two thirds being "conserving food for longer" and "luxury for the elites")
your judging a medieval society with access to magic by the standards of a modern world with access to large technologiesYeah, the claim about not eating octopuses are bullshit. Fishermen absolutely ate them and even figured out which ones were safe to eat. They just never traded it with anyone because octopus, much like shell fish, rots within literal hours and can't be preserved without refrigeration
This misconception of the western world being adverse to seafood are unironically the fault of Americans. There are a ton of Americans in landlocked regions who have never seen a whole fish, to these people fish is canned tuna or processed fish sticks. Hell, you could open a can of whole sardines in front of them and this would make them reel and gag because they've never smelled anything like it. And then there is the fact that some regions simply don't have a robust ocean fishing culture due to the lack of natural harbors, tidal pools or just freezing ocean water year round. Fresh water fishing is very popular though and there is in fact dishes out there that manages to make catfish taste less like mud
You completely misunderstood my comment, this whole misconception about the west never having ever seen a whole fish is because a lot of people think those videos of Americans over reacting to seeing a real fished cooked whole. That is just some landlocked regions in America that is nowhere near any oceans, rivers or lakes but because it's from pre-internet days it just became a sort of tabloid gossip that gets traded around as though it's a fact despite it being from 30 year old videos. You'd be surprised at how long housewives tote these tabloid "facts" as though they are trueyour judging a medieval society with access to magic by the standards of a modern world with access to large technologies
and
Octopus along with Snails and Bugs all have the same "don't eat them" taboo places that eat them are the exception not the rule
Everyone knows what a fish is dumbass they teach you in school. even in landlocked areas even in premodern times fish was exported around to world from places like Egypt and in the modern day it's even easier.
1: Dude I'm Canadian. Stop bringing up fish like your gonna convince me. Maybe if you live in the Mojave without internet you might not have ever seen a fish but here's the thing THE EXCEPTION does not make a good argument to stand on.You completely misunderstood my comment, this whole misconception about the west never having ever seen a whole fish is because a lot of people think those videos of Americans over reacting to seeing a real fished cooked whole. If we look at it historically though, people ate whatever the fuck was edible in the region and cooked accordingly. Sometimes you get a bumper harvest of apples and just apples. Well better start getting creative with those apples because that's 60% of what you're eating for the next 3 months
As for the magic thing, we've been told repeatedly that Blythe has been casually casting advanced magic and that what he does is absolutely not normal. He's practically a one in ten million magic prodigy. The ability to freeze things solid like that would be well beyond the capabilities of a standard mage and it's pretty clear that magic engineering is also very behind
You forgot the "maybe it's not THAT rotten" section...I've always said that in those fantasy mangas where some of the ingredients we eat nowadays are considered trash probably never had to deal with famines a lot because i guarantee you if famines really strike hard they'll try to eat anything and make it more palatable, hell a third of the food we have today where created in times of duress (the others two thirds being "conserving food for longer" and "luxury for the elites")
