Where's the manga, bro?
In another room. Prior to my last move, I had a large bookshelf stacked about three deep with tanks (and a smaller one with the entire US Shonen Jump Monthly print run), but sold 75-80% of the tanks and the SJ because one of the collections had to go. I spent about half of what I got on the move and pocketed the other half, and still have a couple shelves of tanks of series I really like.

This was unfortunately inevitable. Any website that hosts the images themselves is liable to get taken down, which the big publishers have ample incentive to do. The only way around it is to not host copyrighted content at all. Maybe in the year 20XX when AI is good enough to fully replace human translators, we could have a browser extension that translates the manga for you in real-time off of screenshots as you read on the publisher's official website. Until then, it's more of the endless cat and mouse game. You could probably build a decent-ish version of this right now, if any web developers with a lot of free time are listening.

There are already several, ichigoreader and cotrans off the top of my head.

Even the sketchy sites arent loading the chapters for me, disabling ad block just gets me porn or gambling ads and maybe some sneaky malware loading. :notlikethis:

That's not the same thing. Both require you to upload the images manually, and they work one chapter (or worse, image) at a time, so the translation is inevitably going to be shitty since they won't even consistently translate names.
EDIT: Seems like ichigoreader actually has an extension... where you have to pay a subscription fee even to use free models, and which outputs left-aligned text in a non-comic font. Yeah, we're not there yet.

How many of you crying and screaming have actually bought the comics you read from this site?
I did and that's why it's not a big hit for me. A lots of the nuked series i was following are in my home library right now, they're published even in French. I also have a few of them on, bookwalker. And i wouldn't have discovered them without the help of the scanlations.

But for the ones unavailables in english/french, it's something else. Especially some oneshots or very niche series that have been nuked. The DMCA was really large, way beyond the popular and/or availables series, it's quite something.

That's literally irrelevant because:

1 - even if the person is from a English speaking country, manga can be overpriced

2 - can have shitty translation

3 - if you're not from English speaking country you can suffer same issues above in your country

4 - if you're not from English speaking country you simply can't buy English version a lot of times, either because:

4a - if physical it can be extremely expensive depending on your currency, and then there's shipping
Example, in my county 1 dollar = at least 5 in my currency, the manga is $10? I'll pay at bare minimum 50 + shipping + tax

4b - many times you also can't buy digital either because again, either expensive as fuck, shitty translation, or region blocked

5 - probably more reasons that don't come at the top of my head right now

In short, your question flies in the face of reality because things are not that simple

Well still... DMCA is worse than Brazil because Brazil's government has a law that takes down pirated manga and someone gets arrested.

One of their source of entertainment got taken away from them and they immediately resort to arguing in here as a substitute.

Surely all the scanlators actually keep their og files on them and not only on MD, right? But I guess laying low for a while before starting to reupload all the lost chapters is a no go huh?

Is this whole DMCA thing MD only? Or is there other site that got it too?

Once in a while I remember hearing this year about a group or two getting dmca to their sites, and I'm pretty sure someone said in a comment that baka tsuki got dmca too, but otherwise nobody else

Mangadex is too much of a easy target lol

I've heard that some of the biggest sites were shut down this way last year, but I didn't pay much attention to it, since MD usually had a quiet deal with publishing official editions or deleting series after licensing them. But it looks like they've decided to go all out this time.

From what I've heard, many translators have their own versions. But after this raid, I'm even afraid to discuss it, since they are probably reading this thread to monitor the situation.

There was a big sweep of Brazilian sites... early this year? Late last year?

This is eventually going to sweep up everything it can, and the choices will be sites like MD that comply and have limited selections, or sites that are hosted in countries that won't enforce takedowns. It's going to get a lot worse in the coming months.

About 5-6 years ago this happened with Russian sites too, although previously many copyright holders did not care about us due to the lack of licensing for most of the titles. But after Crunchroll and Wakanim came to us, their Russian representatives started going to sites demanding that most of the fan subs/dubs/scanlate be removed. Ironically, after the "famous events" all of this disappeared in an instant, since the mentioned sites temporarily stopped working in Russia.

At least 25 of the series I am reading got hit by the DMCA nuke.

This was a fucking retarded move by the publishers. If they thought piracy rates were bad before, it will only get worse now.

Official anime and manga copies are far too expensive outside of Japan in many cases and taking down such a vast number of titles on Mangadex will not bring in any more revenue to the decrepit idiots who run these publishing companies.

It's been my experience that a baffling number of people publishing anything on the internet, do not actually keep their own content saved locally. Just reading anecdotes from a handful of scanlators this morning, none of them were saying they had a full set of backups saved.

I don't know if this is some kind of attitude shift but it strikes me that people think once it's uploaded, it's there for good and they're free to delete it locally to get the space back.
