This reminds me of the old relationship saying
"They're just not that into you" - This saying is often used to describe why the partner just isn't putting in the effort to keep things going, while others will move mountains to make things work.
The man is willing to wait for her, and told her he'll keep her flame burning (by keeping the ring), but she pushed him away, only to act like he was important to her when no ones around... Well obviously he wasn't
THAT important to her, she's just being dramatic for her own self satisfaction.
If this relationship was important, it'd takes precedent over moving for work, or just moving to a new location, or anything else - it's a give and take with each other.
So to me, it seems like an unimportant relationship, that neither side (or perhaps just the girl's side) really fought to keep going, and now they're acting like - at the very end - it was some big important thing to them.
If you were
that into them, it would have kept going, but it didn't, because you weren't.
But I'm analysing a fictional relationship written for entertainment, what a waste of time.
