I disagree with everyone defending Pakis because of his sobstory.
Leaving all the other underground robbing and murder stuff aside, he was even told to treat Frim kindly by his mother and lied to her about it. He knew that what he did was wrong and did it regardless, not trying one bit to be better.

On top of that he's a murderer who kills people because they talked back to him.
Yes poor the innocent people.
I would think his mother would be deeply disgusted by this. "You are extacly like YOUR FATHER!"
and when the father confronts him for his shitty behavior.. what does he do? insulting his father. Such a CLEVER way to get killed and dooming his mother to a slow death.

I feel she is more concerned about the position she is in with the brother than she should be with the two guards that just proved themselves standing behind her.

Pakis boy is actually not bad, just stupid. This new boy on the other hand, looks kinda ominous
I disagree. Go back and re-read chapter 1 again. That kids an awful person.

Child abuse, murder, thievery, etc. He even ignores his own mother's word. He's not only an idiot, but he's also just a horrible person.

Even boss-man isn't as Evil as Pakis. He punishes people yeah, but only when they do something bad. Pakis finds excuses to punish Frim and would probably kill her if he wasnt responsible for her. Hes killed people for less afterall. Man I hate that kid

Absolutely 0 sympathy and I hope he doesn't get a redemption arc.

This really gives insight on how much of a mess a debt slave system could be.

And to think, it's still somewhat better than outright the slaves = property system model.
In some ways, it's arguably worse. In the "property" model, there's at least some incentive to take care of them and keep them healthy, just like keeping up with maintaining a house or car.
But in the "debt" system, they are only working temporarily until the work pays off the debt, so there's less reason to treat them well.
Historically, indentured servants were horribly abused for this very reason, often given worse treatment than actual slaves and beaten more harshly, and sometimes they'd quite literally be worked to death right before their contract would expire.

All systems of slavery are bad in different ways, and they basically balance out to being just as horrible overall.

Good point. Both systems have been expressed in various communities in the past. And different cultures have values and principles towards it.
If I remember correctly, in the Philippines, we had a system of debt/war slaves who are freed after a period and since life was valued quite highly, some choose slavery as opposed to death.
And it became a sort of honor code, to only punish death if members of enemy tribes if they have no intent to continue a peace after the period of service.

And there is also the contrast where some folks jealously value their possession, thus do not wastefully spend their possessions.

Yeah, giving Pakis a sad backstory won't change a thing. He's a prick and cunt all the way to the core. At this point it's already become a full fledged cliche "a person becomes bad because of situation force them to". Overused tool to change reader sympathy. A person becomes bad because they let situation force them to and they indulge on it.
And now we know where Pakis learn his skill to be absolute cunt. This Myulade dude is like that fox face from Bleach that joined Aizen.

Also I think we need to talk about how the boss is a shitty father and a leader. Like did he really not noticed Pakis is having anger issue with Frim? He wasn't even trying to hide his displeasure with Frim in the previous chapter.
