They've talked about this before when they were initially laying out the plan, and while there was misunderstanding due to miscommunication and differing values at first, Alan begrudgingly agreed to this arrangement when he was confronted about it by Iris. I know it's been a long time since then, but I'm fairly certain it's all there in the older chapters.
