I think the akahon Negishi is talking about is not the Edo-period one. That word is used to refer to several kinds of books that usually have red covers, chiefly:

• Edo period storybooks (obsolete)
• Pulp fiction (i.e. cheap novels)
• University entrance workbooks (especifically those from Kodansha)
• the Michelin Guide

I'm pretty sure she's referring to the third kind, but it could be the second kind trying to pass it off as the third.
