I feel like those fears were greatly overblown. I even saw comments saying that the scanlator's will get sued and mangaDex will throw them all under the bus.

What it looks like in reality is MangaDex is just doing what every other platform already does. "We aren't responsible for what users upload, please don't sue us".
Realistically speaking, you cant expect youtube to tank the lawsuit whenever someone uploads a full movie and doesn't want it taken down. Same with mangadex.

I just pray the publishers keep ignoring us as they usually do
