Damn, family matters just got real. I agree with the first comment. To add to it, I think this route of Mikoto-san getting a scar via a jealous attack is much better than the novel version. And adds more depth to the characters that the novel kinda lacks.

Yeah, this is an adaptation, though the writer completely rewrote the entire story to lean towards the trauma angle instead of the genetics that she inherited from her mother.

My god ... and all of these misunderstandings and trauma living can all be overcome if everyone just spoke honestly ffs. Something about how communication always seems to be missing when it comes to Japanese characters in mangas. Wonder if that just reflects Japan's culture as a whole.

I doubt the mom herself knows that she's doing those things to assuage her own guilt though. And I don't see how it would help if Mikoto outright told her mom about it.
