I don't get the godfather thing. Like, he is their grandfather, so the connection is already there, no matter what.
It is an old noble mindset.

If the noble (high-rank) were to be to be your godparent of your children and named them, then the godparent's name will be another layer of shield to protect the children. No other random nobles will mess with the children unless they didn't know their godparent noble name.

This troupe may appear in lot of any medieval manga, even the vikings use it as well.

In Italian mafia films this also often appears

Thank you for the translation! Is it just me, or does the wife of the MC change names several times in the chapter?

Yeah, man. That's such an old mindset. What are the chance that the descendant of a heinous criminal of the past would do the same thing as their ancestor? Especially if both of them are having black hair, having kids with a noble, protecting the commoners, and be some kind of leader in their territory uuuuuhhhhh I swear they're not that similar uuuuuhhhhh

Fuck, there's a chance, especially if the nobles/royalties start poking around with his family/the MSG group

It's not about blood relations, but about protection.
In this case it's the grandfather, but it can be anyone influential/powerful enough with friendly ties to the father.

Hence the giving of names.. In giving the kids names, the godfather recognises the children as "Kin", with all the responsibilities that come with that.
Including guaranteed adoption/care should something happen to the father.

It's still an existing mindset let's say your father is a mass murderer people will automatically assume you might be one too.

Two other people already explained why the godfather thing would be a big deal. But even ignoring that, he wasn't just refusing to be their godfather. He actively told Sawadi to break all familial ties with him. You can't say "the connection is already there" when someone literally lays out how to (and tells you to) break said connection.
