There's a huge difference between being the most powerful people in the country, and being powerful enough to take on the whole country by yourselves. And it seems unlikely that Lumi would join them in such an endeavor.

But I think this entirely encapsulates why I have such a problem with this arc, and how it turned out in the anime.

It felt so...pointless, and as you said, effectively cruel to Anis in denying her agency. The fact that the girl she loves, the ONLY ONE who ostensibly should have had her back, wanted to give up her humanity just to "protect" (?????) Anis from the nobility who would've scoffed at her taking the throne, and acting like Anis being mad at her was her being unreasonable??

Real talk - if I were Anis, I would have been so furious at the prospect of the person I cared about most being so dismissive of my wishes, that I'd have given up on the kingship, said "alright, peace then", and just left everyone behind and fucked off to another nation as a nameless refugee or something.
Fuck the king & queen, let Euphie become an immortal, amoral spirit ruler for eternity, to hell with the nobility and everyone else, and just go make magic lamps and horseless carriages for a rival kingdom and profit for the rest of my natural life.

Like.....as you said, literally no one is actually sticking up for her at this point, and are instead coddling her and whilst simultaneously putting her up on a pedestal. And even in the face of certain defeat to Euphie she still somehow gonads-up and stands on principle in the face of inevitability.

Yeah this has been fucking infuriating to read. Im fully in on sunk cost at this point but my god what a contrived waste of my time this has been.
They treat anis as completely incapable of doing anything herself. Like all this time what she was able to accomplish had no merit. Nobody cares about what anis genuinely thinks or wants and they one sidedly push their own beliefs on her from start to finish of this story. From the spoilers i see in this thread it seems one more ass pull is coming to truly seal anis' fate as utterly disregarded on all fronts by all parties.
I think the funniest thing she could do is lose the duel and then immediately kill herself in retaliation.

I will say that at least Anis would be less petty than me in her situation. I'd try to set it up so Euphie ended up killing me during the duel just to potentially guilt her with that knowledge for the rest of her eternal existence out of spite for all the horseshit being foisted upon Anis all this time.

This is the entire point of the conflict. Both of them are willing to give up a part of themselves permanently in order to become the king and absolutely don't want to see the other person give up a part of themselves. Anis would give up basically her entire self, she would inflict an ego death upon herself just to be able to do her job as a royal, and Euphie would give up her humanity and eventually all her connections to the world.
Anis would probably have accepted Euphie becoming king instead of her after the talk with Tilly, but she absolutely can't accept Euphie giving up her humanity for that and Euphie can't accept Anis giving up her mind.

Pretty much any other solution I have seen in the comments here wouldn't be acceptable either.

• They can't get married and rule together, as the society wouldn't accept a ruling couple that has (at least from their perspective) no chance of having an heir.
• They can not run away from the kingdom because they care about the people of the kingdom.
• They can't defeat/remove the nobility, because they a) don't have the political power to do that, b) aren't strong enough to defeat the entire nobility on their own and c) starting a revolution/civil war would be a terrible move, they wouldn't want to put the people in danger, the nobility with the ability to use magic can probably defeat the entirety of the kingdom's commoners, so it wouldn't work, and even if they succeeded they would end up defenceless against all neighbouring kingdoms.
• Anis killing herself/purposefully getting killed by Euphie out of pettieness is not in character, she wouldn't want Euphie to live with the guilt.

I do however wonder why Euphie didn't use her instant win card, that would force Anis to not be eligible for the throne? The king has stated previously that a monster taking the throne would be absolutely unacceptable, so if Euphie revealed to the king that Anis is turning into a dragon and the process likely can't be stopped (the dragons curse(?)), the king would have no choice but to classify Anis as incapable of being king. Maybe Euphie thinks that it would be too cruel to Anis?
