I can't blame Avril for acting this way. She was basically a slave to her family for most of her life do she has little to no understanding of her own worth or genuine care from others. It is tragic that Dylan proposing to her got her to question what unconditional love was...

usually, I very much dislike tungsten-like protags, but in this case, it's Dylan that actually pisses me off more. He should know enough about how dense she is by now. Why is he stunned by her not getting his, contextually, vague proposal? So stunned that he aborts. "I gotta try through actions, not through words". You've barely tried with words, you muppet. Double down, triple down, verbally discard the contract bullshit. For once just lay it all bare if you're so smitten with her.

It is 100000% on everyone in that House now, to speak directly and unequivocally to her about how smart and valid and loved she is.

I don't know if it's some implicit facet of Japanese propriety, but NO ONE ever seems capable of just...being straight to the point. It's always linguistic side stepping, and it's precisely why protagonists like this one can work, because every person around them seems incapable of just telling them directly, leading to misunderstandings and prolonged plot.

So we'll see how many chapters this drags out now.

No, Japan. In the West, a man who cannot expressive himself unambiguously, including in his contradictions of others, is viewed with contempt, and this ethos is millennia old. Dylan simply would not be screwing-up in this manner.
