Depending how this unfolds I might dip out on this series. It was a very nice feel good story at the start and a nice bit of happiness in my otherwise miserable existence, so if it goes all dark and gloomy and edgy I'll be very disappointed. Just another example of the world not allowing nice things to exist.
This, a hundred times. Sooooo not interested in girls randomly becoming psychos just for the shock value and edginess (and with the author apparently gloating about it, that seems to be the case).

Let's see how it develops, but if it keeps going down this road (and from the translator's notes, it seems like it), it'll be the second major "wow this went from a 10/10 to a NotInterestedAtALL/10 for me" yuri manga for me (the first one being Yuri Is My Job where the "main" characters simply vanished from the story completely).

EDIT: just read full spoilers for Dominant and it seems really bad IMO. I don't have high hopes for this now, but let's see how it goes.

well holy guac that escalated quickly

uhhh i have two "theories"

1) senpai is a wacko and felt betrayed so she commits SA or something else traumatizing. :fml:

2) senpai has some weird quick thinking and thought if they weren't going to be together anymore then she should give her an awful memory of parting so kouhai wouldn't feel guilty or miss her.... which is still pretty wacko but is more like acting/pretending rather than have the ill intent of actually harming kouhai. :finnawoke:

so what'll happen next
1) uhhhh well an awful thing. and they are no longer in contact. (and she lied about the double date thing)

2) Kouhai sees through her wacko-ness and even calls it out as bs and senpai drops the box cutter and they COMMUNICATE ffs and now present day they're together.
Cuz you see, they no longer have their pretend S relationship, its now a real one.

but hey that just a theory. a GL theory :korone:

Now that I have got over the box cutter development, let's talk the two new characters. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of their personalities even with just one chapter (and the other girl doesn't actually show up). Like Kasumi, they were plagued by disappointment over their perceived lack of achievement. But they manifested their resentment in the form of rule-breaking behaviors, in this case having a secret relationship right on school ground. In Sayori's mind, she was getting back at the well-mannered girls who presumably looked down on them ("Who's laughing now?") by doing things they were not supposed to do.

While Mizuki didn't show it, she must have been frustrated over her lack of artistic talent, and the expensive equipment might be her way of compensation, but unfortunately it just earned her ridicules. Likely the same thing happened in college, and she had bottled up her bitterness for some time before Sayori announced her change of plan. Sayori noted that there were sides of Mizuki people failed to see, but she himself failed to realize the extent of her senpai girlfriend's resentment.

I notice that Sayori didn't call Mizuki "oneesama", which means they didn't stick to the roleplaying like Kasumi and Haruyo do. While the main pair idolize Class S and seek to emulate the relationships they read in the old stories, Sayori and Mizuki seemed to just use it as an excuse for breaking school rules and having fun. Of course what they have was a full blown romantic relationship striped of any pretense, as pointed out by Kasumi. The question remains, how are they still together after what Mizuki did? Sayori has every right to run for the hill, but here she seems eager to have a double date with the main characters. Hopefully we'll find out in volume 3.

Edit: I almost forgot about the letters. I made a joke last chapter about a secret society but it might be true after all?

Assuming Sayori isn't somehow living with Mizuki at present, I think it could be as simple as Mizuki threatening to take her own life, and Sayori being in love with her still to some degree, relents to stay with her so...that...doesn't happen.
And maybe she's found a rhythm of sorts in spite of it all, given she didn't seem too in denial or defeated about it all (though she's probably great at wearing masks given her entire clandestine outlaw relationship before then, so who can say at this point).
I expect it's not a great relationship though, yeah.

Wait is Yuri not a secret society? I was told I had to buy a membership and everything, don't tell me those girls at that Renn Faire scammed me

From the vanilla middle schooler that is Haruyo to the adult bitterness of Mizuki, huh. I love that the manga is finally properly baring its fangs without hiding in the woods of vagueness.

Kasumi has this haziness to her perspective, probably owing to her own confusion at herself, to her own attempts at running away from whatever it was that hurt her, so seeing the very straightforward twist to Sayori and Mizuki's story was a very pleasant surprise.

Yeah similar thinking on how it’s not about Mizuki threatening harm to Sayori, but Mizuki threatening to harm herself if Sayori doesn’t stay.

Which is still tragic. Mizuki may see herself as worthless without Sayori. Her terrible art skills, enrolling in a “no-name” art school as no other would accept her. Seeing a loved one excel in what you lack, on the verge of losing them because you’re not good enough to follow. That must burn Mizuki to her core.

I empathize with Mizuki, though the coercion we just witnessed…yikes. But that makes her an interesting, gray character.

Not sure how things will end, but I hope Sayori and even Mizuki find some peace.

Yeah - my rationale says that everything we've seen of Mizuki thus far speaks to her not expressing herself outward.
She might feel the most bold/comfortable when it's just her and Sayori, but everything about her was covering herself up; folding herself small; seeking invisibility from the eyes of others. Someone like that, so used to hiding herself away from confrontation, seems more the kind to turn violence and threats toward herself and not toward someone else.
And...she loves Sayori. Deeply, it would seem, and hurting Sayori physically seems counterintuitive for her character in that light, so (I guess) it becomes hurting Sayori emotionally through self-inflicted violence.

And if that is the case, it makes for an interesting parallel/mirror to Kasumi:
  • Mizuki's self-inflicted violence being used as a threat to keep her relationship together;
  • Kasumi's self-hatred being used as justification to split her relationship apart.

And another potential parallel building off that:
  • Sayori clearly had no clue Mizuki was capable of this sort of action, judging by her expression at the end of this chapter and her preceding thoughts worrying about making Mizuki cry;
  • Haruyo (presumably) has no clue Kasumi secretly seeks to create a new & better[citation needed] relationship for her, seeing Kasumi being so clingy and enthusiastic (if frantic) every time they meet up.

Was sayuri able to diffuse the situation and work out their problems? If she wasn't and scissorina carved her initials into her, there's no way they'd still be together... right? :meguuusad:

I was kinda expecting things to become darker as there clearly is the question of poor Kasumi's trauma. And during the second half of the chapter I did feel some kind of unease at Mizuki, she didn't feel... wholesome? Somehow? Still the end of the chapter was surprising because of the quick escalation! This does not feel gratuitous or "being edgy for the sake of it" however, the author seems to want to explore darker themes too, for which I'm ready.

The reveal that there was another letter just made me laugh, like there's this chain of S couples creating future S couples, that's somewhat hilarious (although maybe the author will also explore it further back and it'll be something dark heh).

Hopefully our main couple can overcome the darkness.

It turns into a quest to find the Progenitor Yuri to undo the original pair's curse that has affected every S-couple since giving them all bad endings

Like, National Treasure style or something.

Feels like something Haru would enjoy doing, anyway.
