He seems to have choked from over-studying and over-worrying leading up to the exam. A while back, his mom noticed the same pattern emerging and invited Anna over for dinner to help snap him out of it. Just a guess here, but that's likely also why she greenlit his stay at Casa Yamada over the break rather than just letting him sit at home alone with only his own head as a distraction.
