Hope you feel bad for chewing him out last time
I'm sure she will, but keep in mind the kid also could've told her he gave the sandals to a girl who needed them instead of letting her think he lost them.

TBF it seemed from his reaction like he'd already learned that trying to do something like that wouldn't work.

lol with so many siblings you'd think they'd ask/be used to being called by their first names with friends

Because he's a man (despite still being a boy). He won't make excuses when he knows he did the right thing. You can also call it rightful indignation. A lesser man would immediately launch into a tirade of explanations trying to make himself look better. Even though it wouldn't change the fact the sandals are gone. If you check the previous chapter, the mom didn't ask him what happened, she was just angry about the loss of sandals. Not that I'd be particularly blaming her as she would have her hands absolutely full with five sons.
I’m impressed she so straightforward and honest with her feelings to him, especially when she was surrounded by his family.
Shirou is as impressive, to talk to her while being surrounded by his family. Must be quite embarrassing.

:questionblob:

explaining relevant circumstances is not making excuses and doesn't make you a "lesser man", wtf? this sounds like some Andrew Tate shit or something, jeez.

Isn't Andrew Tate the infamous criminal who keeps assaulting women and fleeing from justice? I don't honestly know much about him, aside from that. You might know more if you can make such a connection between what I wrote and what he has said, but unfortunately I can't comment on that, knowing too little. And not caring to know more, for sure.

I merely said Shirou has strength of character if he can stop himself from making excuses that won't change the outcome (the sandals are gone), when he himself does know he did the right thing and can be proud of what he did. Basically he can afford to ignore her lecture because he has no regrets. Telling the mom all about it would surely be what 90% of kids (or even adults in an equivalent situation) would have done, but it's nice to see in fiction someone who stubbornly didn't. It makes a more interesting character.

Yes apart from being a criminal and all around awful person Tate is known for being an influencer in the "manosphere", promoting weird ideas about masculinity (toxic masculinity) which is why I referenced him. Because you said making excuses would make him a lesser man, which is bizarre.
Again, correcting someone's incorrect assumptions is not making excuses. Sure it doesn't change the outcome of the sandals being gone but it changes the outcome of his mom being angry at him. I'm not saying he absolutely should have done that, just that it was an option if he wanted to avoid the scolding.

I guess it may look so strange that it made you interpret it like that, but I merely use the "lesser man" as a joke. Like Character A walked over the hot coals, while a lesser man would go around. I don't remember where I got that "lesser man" thing from. It might have been Lord of the Rings, or something, and definitely in a more serious scene!

It's a bit hard to explain, but my viewpoint in this is that Shirou made a sacrifice knowingly. He lost the sandals his parents bought for him, which is not okay as such, but he was willing to do it to help another person in greater need than himself (she had wounded feet). By staying silent he accepted the punishment, the lecture, since he did lose the sandals, no matter the reason, but he could do it because he did it knowingly and in his opinion for a justified reason. But if he explained the situation, and surely gained the mother's acceptance since she's not a monster, it would buy his way out of the punishment. He didn't want that. He wanted to feel like he made a sacrifice and is willing to pay the price. I doubt he really thought about it this deeply, but it must be his personality.

Naturally I'm only writing this because this is fiction. In real life only an extraordinary child would have done the same. Certainly not me. Like someone offhandedly mentioned, if it was an unreasonable/abusive mother, it would also explain the silence, but that's clearly not the case here. She's just too busy with five sons.
