thank you for the TL!

on that knife, can't imagine it being used for other things, aside from a weapon if you have wind magic.

Rudy could add a detachable handle for one of the blades 🤔 or Sorophia might has to come back for an additional normal knife

Thats a fantastic weapon for sorophia. i did imagine it as a flaming weapon but i admit i thought it was gonna be a chainsaw-esque dagger that can light itself on fire which would have allowed her to do a flaming slash.

So rudy used a steel-wool wire and salamander mane to enable the whip to burst into flame when mana is used in it with the red barrat flintongue as the ignition trigger. maybe she could find a way to coat the whip in oil or something to reduce the mana needs for ignition which also could reduce the strain on the whip itself or, depending on the oil, increase the temperature or attributes for a different type of attack. Usually adding a liquid onto steel wool as a whip would just cause drops to fly everywhere and cause collateral damage but with sorophias wind shroud spell there is the chance she can control the oil away from her and her allies.

this series always manages to surprise me in certain details.

I love how Fal is just on speed dial for crafts issues. I wouldnt doubt that Fal being reported just causes the guild to treat her as a neutral entity since shes basically biologic flavored rudy

Forget 2 years, without additional considerations I'm countin months if not weeks.

It needs to be soaked in wax to reduce friction and act as the fuel so the wire lasts longer. It still doesn't deal with durability, so it's more like giving a wind user a pocket fire attack rather than a main weapon.

Might be suitable for grabbing items or burning stuff at long range, so given the time constraints and budget, Rudy did a very good job.

i think the wire is made of salamander mane plus the steel wool wire to give it some strength and flammability without needing direct fuel. so i can assume that unless the fire and other forces any attack has exceeds whatever steel wool wire can endure it can last a bit longer.

also this was just a dagger that can turn into essentially a urumi and set it on fire so i can guess sorophia would just use her sword as her main weapon still

Did they explain what salamander mane was? I would think its a mixture of three wires:

One for durability
One for fireproof and negligible thermal expansion
One for holding or being the fuel.

Salamander mane sounds like the second one, unless salamanders her have burning manes.

And regardless of material, supplementing with fuel will definitely be more practical than expecting the same thing to burn for years.

Question: How... do you know all that?

Dose Ivy's whip-sword light on fire? No, but she's hot like fire so it still counts! :dogkek:
Ivy's Whip-sword does in fact light on fire in some of her moves!
If I recall correctly even back in Soul Calibur 2 her unblockable charge move had her whip on fire.

Rudy's Masterpiece
Dagger
1d4 + 2 slashing
Finesse, Reach
Improved Reach - This weapon gains an additional 5' reach.
Versatile Reach - This weapon may hit an additional time (on the same target or a target adjacent to the target) for every 5' of reach not needed by to hit the target.
Pyro Mode - While holding this weapon, you may use a free action to ignite or douse this weapon. When ignited, deals 1d10+1 additional fire damage. Consumes one charge per hit. Maximum 50 charges. Charges may be restored if repaired by Rudy the Blacksmith.
Easily Tangled -While not affected by the Wind Shroud spell, Improved Reach and Versatile Reach may not be used, and also applies a -3 chance to hit to attack rolls.
Thank gods my players aren't reading this manga.

The wax part is about knowing the physics involved in candles. Even then, we're still handwaving a LOT of fuel efficiency and wax not flying off while swinging.

The friction was one of the biggest concerns if you watch the videos of people who tried to make IRL whipswords. You have to make it durable AND frictionless, and we're assuming Rudy solved a lot of these with fantasy steel and wind magic.

and the rest, well......setting someone on fire is a lot more important than making a "burning slash".

I've no idea how I hadn't caught it yet but the dungeon is called Waelthroad because it's in a whale's throat...
