I think it's completely fair. For many groups, seeing an ML snipe go up is already exhausting enough as it is, even before you take into account the effort they've been doing to put out good translations and the knowledge that a significant amount of the MD audience aren't going to bother critically evaluating the translation and just want something up asap. It's not particularly fair to then ask a group member to also spend the effort seriously critiquing a translation that isn't theirs, especially when the vast majority of ML uploaders won't even bother to look at the comments, let alone actually give a damn about negative feedback when it costs them so little effort to get the clout.

This case is a bit more nuanced because the guy is going around asking for feedback, but there's plenty of times when I don't want to go 'cool thank you for contributing to running off a good group'

You have a point. I never would have sided with a random ML uploader who just splatters their random logo on every page. But, as you recognized, I think this is quite different, the quality of the translation absolutely needs some improvements, but our guy is willing to work and ask for feedback, so being blunt in the face of that isn’t fair towards what is, at least, a good intention!
For what we know, give him a change, put their resolve to the test, and we could have another good scalator in the community.

Is it, though? MTL would have been better than this.

Like on page 4:

"Hey, bully!" -> "Hey, gloomie!" (or similar insult)

"You're always being a shady businessman and taking advantage of others." -> "You're always sulking in the corner of the classroom."

"Somehow, do something about the mirror." -> "You need to smarten up."

"Seriously, because you're in the same class as us, we lost the relay race." is less egregious but class should be team and relay race should've been dodgeball game.

And that's just the one page I bothered to check once I realized shit was rancid.

Indeed, I absolutely agree with the quality issues, and I bet it comes down to or guy’s poor english writing skills.
I just got a bit phased by your prior choice of words, that were, by themselves, quite blunt, even if the motivation bending them is sound.
Ultimately, given how very few groups are keeping up with high quality scanlations, I’d always rather try to steer a new face in the right direction, be encouraging, maybe severe, but, at least, welcoming.

I may just be random do-gooder, hope I didn’t step on anybody’s feet.
