To be truth thou, this sounds like a reference to General Douglas MacArthur use of aviator shades in the landing at Leyte in his return in the Philippines.

Different in the raw. Page 37 is probably more concise because it’s sent with telegram. “Dad” just reuse the code's expression to describe the situation to his “son” in page 40.
