Mangadex to purge titles for legal reasons

They did say they wanted to try and restore the series pages without any chapters

We didn't get any heads up during the DMCA purge, so I'm not sure why people are so surprised.

They've said for a long time they'll respect takedown requests
They also said such mass removals wouldn't happen since each n' every comic posted to the site as prior approval.

Yet one irate Korean company drags three Japanese companies to do it,and here we are.

MangaDex still trying to deny that they're a piracy website and are now actively removing content to comply with laws that simply do not exist.

I mean would you trust a site that removes stuff without any communication? Plus I am sure for most groups this was just another item that made them decide to remove their stuff
sure. But at least for me the goal was and is to keep the website with its library alive .
all this posting i did aimed to convince everyone involved to change the course of action and make mangadex a better place again.
but removing the uploads now is just as destructive and stupid as what the admins did
with the , lets call them, "loli titles".

(i am not talking about the great purge from may, if they hadn't removed the chapters the website would have been shut down. that the website and its operators got into this exact situation that they either comply or get busted is a different story about opsec persec and selfperception)

i am a longtime user and i just dont want to give up on Mangadex just now.
I love and i deeply support the idea it once was created with in mind:

Make scanlations, all scanlations, no matter what genre author or content, available to the people and serve as memorial for the groups and the hard work they poured into their scanlations and the stories behind it.

one i remember very fondly is the story of monkeyvodoo from facepalm scans who uploaded 11GB of Data while being on roaming. . .
https://mangadex.org/chapter/a6dea9c0-7a77-4d16-8d19-343d2da47785/1
https://mangadex.org/chapter/7fa3fb08-1cb7-423a-ba22-3cec311282a6/1

all this gave me as reader the feeling to be part of something
i Just dont want to lose this

I don't recall anyone saying this. In fact, only a tiny minority of titles have prior approval. I can name like, 1 title that isn't self-published that received approval from the author.
They did say it,everytime someone mentioned MangaDex in some capacity, that is what they said.

And the fix after the 7000+ corpses?,a mandatory checkbox for uploaders that the series has prior approval.

Prior approval is part of the promise MangaDex made to make themselves seem like they were not a piracy site.

How is it enforced?...good question.

The long running identity crisis needs to end,MangaDex is a piracy site, complying with anything, especially non-existent laws,is not what they should be doing.

We both know that this isn't reasonable and the people that come here weren't old users, but strangers that want to stir shit and be in an online drama.
you better check that again.
most of the people here are long time users.

i used MD even before registering . i did it back in 2019 when the search was disabled for not logged in useres because the servers suffered from overload almost everyday.

i dont want to stir shit and i hate drama.

All uploaders and groupleaders: Please stop removing your uploads. This is not helping.

we try to convince the Admins to do better and save the website and the content.
Removing even more stuff is just a terrible spiteful move.

Understandably, those uploaders might be pissed. Maybe they're not helping, but so is nuking titles and then calling people here with the pdf word.

It's basically a FAFO thing, I feel?

imo he's talking about the ultimate cuck whose wife cucked him with his best friend
and all of his friend group left him because of his pro-ice/racist views
That would certainly narrow it a lot,but I probably have not heard who that specifically is.

They did say it
Who? Because it's certainly not anyone on MD staff. Maybe you're thinking of WC or comick?
uploaders that the series has prior approval
It's not MD's fault if uploaders lie, but it's still their responsibility to remove offending titles when legally requested to.

Also, who actually gives a shit about that check box? It's a CYOA so MD can deflect blame.
The long running identity crisis
There is no identity crisis. You just don't like what MD has always been.

For users uploading chapters that there is a one time review for each language the site supports. This is mostly just to stop blatant bad actors from spamming uploads. After the one review subsequent uploads are just uploaded. (Unless a user has some sort of rules violation)

For users creating titles each title is reviewed for basic completeness and blatant bad data. Users with certain roles are not subject to this review (unless a user has some sort of rules violation)

But most of this was put into place for V5 and not prior versions of the site.

I does feel like there is an identity crisis going on but not for the same reasons. (My opinion) Mangadex was a community and still is a community to most users but Mangadex no longer "acts" like a community. The things that happen now are rigid, sneaky, and corporate feeling. This causes a disconnect from what users expect and what they end up getting.

sooo AFAIK 10 entries have been deleted and the removal of the loli stuff has been put on hold right? have they been restored? are they proceeding with the removal? or is it still on hold?

I think this could easily be solved by having more staff. There's like what 25 staff for the 3 million+ users and 75,000+ titles? Every time I see a staff member post a screenshot of the report queue it's at 2000+ reports.

Of course, more staff also means more opportunities for rogue staff responses like we saw here.
have they been restored
I think some of the 10 series pages have been restored (like Stray Cat manga) without chapters. I haven't bothered to look for the more extreme series to see if they've been restored.

I am generally inclined to agree with this. I will say there are a couple of mods that do participate in the forums to some degree, and they're pretty easy to talk to and reasonably open about site dynamics if you have a question - that's the sort of community involvement that can provide a framework for dealing with these kinds of circumstances. There is nominally a PR member of staff (though exactly what that involves is something I've never looked into), but having a designated community PR contact (or three) for internal communications would seem like a good approach to this.
