Imagine going on a date with some random girl on christmas instead eating good with your family
Japan sees Christmas as a very romantic thing for some reason
Not for some reason, it's just a very commercialized western holiday for them. It doesn't mean anything culturally or traditionally. It's not even an actual national holiday. On the other hand New Year's is. There's big traditions with New Year's and that's the day you spend with family. For Japanese people it's probably weird to imagine spending New Year's Eve partying and drinking instead of with family or by going to shrines.

I still can't get over the fact that Kusunoki calls MC with his first name.
From all the romcoms I've read, I learned that unless they're childhood/old friends, calling first name of someone opposite gender is supposed to show a very close relationship and probably more than just friends.
I guess because they went to the same middle school? It's an interesting one because it's becoming a dated trope in Japan. It's not really that big of a deal for people to call each other by their first names especially as younger generations are more influenced by western culture. It is really unprofessional in the workplace and whatnot, but if you're friends its not a big deal.

Right. You can heavily infer that Kusunoki likes Keisuke.

The issue is, she is actively running from him, and from actually confronting herself about her feelings.
Which again, is her being avoidant, and that is a marked departure from her behavior since entering high school, as all of her successes and progress toward her "debut" involved her actually being direct and not running away from things.

She wants to be more confident, she wants to speak up and make friends and remake herself--and in this one instance--that I'd argue is quite significant given Keisuke is at the core of her successful debut--she suddenly reverts and turns back into her middle school self, and is repeating 'bad habits'.
Worse yet, this could end up costing her Keisuke's friendship anyway, because realistically this much avoidant behavior would put off most people, when even attempts to talk are met with deflection or absolute radio silence.

Which was my original point - Kusunoki had been making great strides in overcoming her past self, but her character has completely reverted now, and she's undoing all of that progress she made.

And, she's doing this entirely on her own--she's not talking to Keisuke or Otobe, she's not confided in either of them as to what happened to her before, and all three of them are in the dark, as a result. She'd just have to be honest and up front with Keisuke, or even just with Otobe, and a lot of this would be on its way to being solved.
Instead, Otobe thinks that her best friend has no interest in Keisuke, and thinks she now has the green light to make her move on her crush. Because Kusunoki effectively lied by refusing to face herself, she's now risking her best friend getting her heart broken when the truth inevitably comes out.

This is Old Kusunoki behavior, not New Kusunoki behavior, and I can't help but feel like the writing is forcing her to regress to set up this tension, instead of trusting in the three of them to navigate things as they are now, and find the best solution.
I agree but feel the writing is accurate to real life. Progress isn't linear and when trauma is involved you can fall back into an older pattern if you think that will protect you from harm. It'd be like me going to work and all my coworkers are not only ignoring me but getting along fine with each other in front of me. Amplify that since it's school and you're stuck in class all day and it's hella traumatic.

Although I'm not a fan of this development I don't think the writing is to blame

They didn't exactly know each other back then right?
But yeah, it's definitely a romcom manga thing. I'm sure it's not that big of a deal in real life.

And one more chapter where it is painfully obvious taht kusunoki is the least interesting girl. Do we really, really need her fleeing and escaping in general from the situation?

Otobe is a million times better. Even Hebikawa is more interesting, although a controversial option.

But no, we already kinda know that the boring girl from the title will win, just because. Seriously author, you managed to make her into the LEAST interesting option, by far...

Please, plese let Otobe or even Hebikawa win...
Actually, Kusunoki running away and making herself unavailable is, in reality, a big "nope, not interested", but since it is a manga, the least logical event always happens.

Otobe is, objectively seen, the best option here as she's not running away and is not a manipulative, delusional brat.

However, even Hebikawa would be a better choice in case she realises just how dumb and delusional she was all the time and honestly works on improving herself.

Go get him girl! Our MC deserves someone who actually has made up their mind and is committed!

Alright Otobe, cleaning up and saving this Trainwreck chapter.

Snek and Moe are carrying this manga. Kusunoki can be friends with her stuffed animals and leave this manga already.

Just in it for Liquid Snake at this point, she's the only character that has anything interesting at all going on in her story beats. Don't even care about the romance aspect, people this self deluded probably shouldn't get into relationships anyway for fear of the never ending arguments that would ensue from their countless misunderstandings.

Happened in Toradora, happened in that Tune 2d Midnight Heart, happened in Boys Be, happened in White Album,... yes it will happen. I think there are 10,000 renditions of this scene!

Suspension of disbelief is a funny thing.

I can accept magical powers, spirits, monsters, superpowers, gnomes, spider-pigs, tentacled aliens and even evil rainbow ponies. For the sake of the story.

However I can't accept that a violent meeting of mouths at such speeds won't result in a chipped tooth.

I mean, that would be absolutely ridiculous.

to be fair - the stories with magical powers, spirits, monsters, superpowers, and even aliens have them as an established part of the setting, so the buy-in results in knowing that those aren't supposed to be "like our world".

This story, is supposed to be "fully mundane and set in ordinary everyday Japan", which means that it's reasonable to assume physics would operate as we experience it, ourselves.

When it doesn't, and there's no reason to believe it shouldn't, that is actually hard to swallow.
