I'm grateful my parents pointed me towards books I ended up enjoying as a kid; in high school I enjoyed a grand total of one (1) book we read in all four years of literature classes. I am very not surprised that so many kids end up hating reading.

I remember reading "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (I think?) as a middle schooler. In high school, I basically "read" Animal Farm for an exam (Somehow got a C+ on) and read this one assigned book about the holocaust, shit made me tear up when I was reading it after a midterm lol. Now, the only book I've fully read as an adult is "The Stranger" ONLY because of Limbus Company and Meursault's portrayal in it

I actually did read for fun growing up, though that became a bit of a problem later in high school.

Since I enjoyed reading so much, if I got assigned a book I didn't like it was impossible to get me to finish it.

I never wrote any book reports, but I certainly had to write plenty of papers about things we read.

I wish my tulpa had a great rack. But noOoOoo we're going to scream at you and tell you to throw yourself on the train track instead.
I tell you man, this all schizophrenia business is a huge scam!

I remember having to read a lot for an extracurricular club, though we got to choose which ones from the list we read. A lot of those books were quite good, but I cannot for the life of me find them again because they didn't make a big splash.

Now, required reading for school was different. I liked reading books like "1984" or "Flowers for Algernon," but holy hell I hate "Catcher in the Rye" with a burning passion.

I think I got one of my best book report grades just breaking down how much I hate every little thing about that book.

I feel like every adult thought Catcher in the Rye would appeal to teenagers and instead was universally hated. My annotations for that book were just "this kid is fucking annoying" on repeat.

The reader has started writing. It is happening.

Edit: No one's commented on it, but Haisaka is a super supportive friend. Reminds me of someone I know...

He's supposed to be annoying and an unreliable narrator, but also sympathetic because he's become disillusioned with becoming an adult. The issue was there's nothing to sympathize with him because he didn't come across as ever caring about anything. Even his relationship with his sister seems hollow and fake.

If you can't get the reader to care about the protagonist, at least get them to be interested in the story. Catcher in the Rye, with an unlikable narrator who cannot care about anything, can't do either.

Only part of that damn book I thought was interesting was when he got a nosebleed while looking at his friend's mom, and that was more "haha anime trope in a 1951 American book"
