Yes. Yes, it was. Used here & between these two characters is a pretty good subversion of one of the most eye rollingly goofy tropes. This is easily one of the best parodies of it I have seen- the angle, framing, and facial expression are all perfect.

People keep saying he should tell Kawashima about her brother, but honestly I got to ask; Would that really change anything? Kawashima's whole thing is that she's a pushover who quickly folds once the situation is too awkward. If Kimura talks it's probably just going to make the situation worse. Kawashima would probably be more openly and easily led around by her brother, or otherwise try and introduce him to the group, and Ei-kun would very quickly clue in on who his crush actually is. Kimura is probably savvy enough to know that these sorts of stories usually have a BL route with the twink.

Yes, a siscon that exists to obstruct a romance is played and usually annoying.

But, in this case, he's a perfect rival and foil for Kimura. A trope-savvy wingman and a super capable anti-wingman engaging in a battle of wits and social maneuvering has so much potential that it could be its own romcom shounen plot.

1, 2, 3, 4. I declare a shipping war!

Granted...Manaka is kinda weak and overflowing with Losing Heroine energy, so this is hardly a fair fight.
