The origin of the "slime" is the
Shoggoth from H.P. Lovecraft, a downright horrifying creature that appeared later as a 1950's horror/thriller monster called "The Blob" in the movie of the same name.
It morphed into the "Gelatinous Cube" in early DnD, but DnD later added a low-level monster called a slime, that was closer to what JRPG slimes tend to be.
The author here clearly wants to go back to the town-eating Blob, but with the dissolve everything feature from the Gelatinous Cube. At any rate, it ain't no Rimuru.
