It would be funny if house maids bears are just a thing in that universe and his risk avoiding life just means he never found out about it, but everyone else just rolls with it because it is a mundane part of society

Could be he practiced on his own, just doing swings is probably a mild exercise. Doubtful since he passed up on simple squats, but still, some exercise is safer than none at all in the long run.
