So I'm guessing he's refusing to teach the animals how to use nuclear energy in fear of them developing nuclear bombs? I guess he has a legitimate reason to be afraid considering he's Japanese lol.
I think it’s also a valid concern about safe containment. I doubt they can go straight to pebble bed, thorium, or molten salt reactors. And the metallurgy not just for the fuel and reactor but also the steam turbines to handle the immense stresses, too.
Sure, primitive reactors that are relatively safe are possible, but they wouldn’t be producing industrial levels of electricity, and are more research reactors.

And that’s not even getting into the concerns of waste, whether they have an understanding and proper respect for radiation and containment protocols, or if the fuel is even available.

My first guess was that his ship used something even more advanced and dangerous like cold fusion or antimatter, though I guess nuclear fission is also sufficiently difficult and potentially cataclysmic.
