I guess that's one way to inherit/expand a territory. Seems like the count could have explained the situation and a realist demon king and the count would have readily accepted an arranged marriage even if it wasn't a first wife scenario. Instead they imprisoned him and were deprived of he and his armies assistance when in need.

So new wifey?
One for the Harem, yes... A realist Maou would take the Genghis Khan method of securing ...fealty..

Only reason he doesn't/can't is because his Territory is still far from safe or stable, so he simply won't.... yet...
At least that's better Plotanium than the usual Obliviousness, and still allows for the usual Harem Antics/Rivalries.

Just annoyed that he is called "realist" when he then goes risk his life for the people who betrayed him when there's no benefit to it. That's pure idealism and banking on plot armor.
The ants are not hard to beat for him and his army, so no plot armor needed

They're acting like they are, which is why they're leaving the Count behind and only taking the daughter. The ants may not individually be dangerous, but there's a whole swarm of them.

What I understood is that they left him behind because he was almost dead already

Also realist doesn't mean that he can't be decent guy.
Sure, but risking your life and the lives of your most important servants to save the bratty daughter of a guy who just tried to kill you, for no real benefit, goes beyond "decent". The daughter even participated in the plan of trapping him, so she's no innocent.

The initial plan was justified, he knew he was walking into a trap and planned to use it as a justification to later conquer the territory without drawing more aggression from neighbors. But once the ants came in, there was no longer any need for justification. He could let the ants do the dirty job of dealing with the count, then come in and claim the territory from the ants. Saving the daughter is all risk for no benefit. A realist would at least weigh those against each other.

The count's forces were a match for the forces he had deployed, and he had to resort to subterfuge to escape. But then something stronger than the count's forces appears, and he can just rush into the heart of the enemy forces?

The thing about ants (and usually insect species in general) isn't that they're individually strong unless they're of the atlas/stag beetle family; it's more that there's way more of them than there are of you, and you will run out of stamina before they run out of reinforcements.
